Verse of the Day and Devotion

It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.  – Psalm 44:3 NIV

Devotion

You’ve made it to where you should be in life. The journey was long and hard, but you’ve made it just the same. Instead of struggle and frustration, there is success and fulfillment. However, don’t make any mistake about it. You did not make it as far as you have by the excellence of your tools, technology, and weapons. True, without them you would not have made it. True, you had everything you needed. Nevertheless, you had something much more important than that going for you. You had something that can’t be easily quantified or explained going for you.

Neither did you make it by the excellence of your personal qualities and virtues. True, you finally got your act together and focused your strength and energy in the right direction. True, you finally set aside the fads and foibles of your sinful self and put on your new self that had what it takes to get the job done. (Ephesians 4:22-24) Nevertheless, that’s not what put you over the top. Indeed, any attempt to take personal credit for your success would miss the whole point. Any attempt to say that you were the reason for what happened would jeopardize the whole thing.

What was the true source of your success?

It was, of course, the Lord. The Lord saw to it that you had everything you needed. He got you the tools, the technology, and, yes, even the weapons when you needed them. He was the one that oversaw your personal development and turned you into someone worth something, someone to be taken seriously. That’s why it would be the height of self-centered hubris to say anything different. You can go there if you want, but going there would be one of the most foolish things you could ever do. Going there would be an afront to the love that the Lord has for you.

After all, it was His love for you that made it happen. He loved you and made the light of His face to shine upon you. (Numbers 6:24-26) Instead of turning His face away from you, instead of writing you off as a lost cause, He turned to you and lifted you out of the pit you were in. (Psalm 40:1-2)

Don’t ever forget it! Don’t let your success go to your head.

Genesis: Book of Beginnings

Genesis: Book of Beginnings

This book is a Bible Study of the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for this study is the King James Version (KJV). This Book is the first book in the Series entitled Journey Through the Bible.

This book is a Study Guide for the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for the study is the King James Version (KJV). It is fitting that we should start with Genesis, which is the book of Beginnings. Genesis: The Book of Beginnings is the first book in this series of Journey Through the Bible.

Genesis means “the beginning” and it is a book of beginnings. It records the creation of the world and the beginning of the nation of Israel. Chapters 12-50 focus on one man, Abraham, and his descendants. Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob are called the patriarchs of Israel. Jacob’s twelve sons are the beginnings of the twelve tribes of Israel. Through Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, the whole family settles in Egypt.

The word Genesis means origin or creation. Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, is a book of beginnings. It has been said that every major doctrine has its seed or beginning in Genesis. For example, the material universe, the human race, sin, the promise of the Messiah, languages and the Hebrew nation all have their beginnings in the book of Genesis. For this reason Genesis is called the seed pot of the whole Bible. Every great fact, truth and revelation is found in this book in germ form. The book of Genesis is essential to the understanding of all the other books of the Bible.

Moses wrote the book of Genesis about 1500 years before Christ. Moses received the oracles directly from God. They were not handed down by word-of-mouth (Acts 7: 37, 38). God can just as easily tell a person the past as he can the future. The book Genesis covers a time period of nearly 2500 years, from the Creation to the journey of Israel into Egypt.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 5/27/2019

crossIs. 40:6-8 A voice said, “Shout!” I asked, “What should I shout?” “Shout that people are like the grass that dies away. Their beauty fades as quickly as the beauty of flowers in a field. The grass withers, and the flowers fade beneath the breath of the LORD. And so it is with people. The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.”

This is a message that must be heard. We are not immortal in the flesh. There is no “fountain of youth.” We grow old and our bodies show it. If per chance one’s body doesn’t show it, it knows it. We can’t do what we once did. We have more aches and pains than we did in our youth. We can’t escape the fact that life as we know it changes and is slipping away. We know with each passing year that our life span is getting shorter and shorter. Before we even realize it, we are there. Our bodies and minds begin to fail us.

But, there are two things we can count on to never fail us: the life of God in us and the Word of God given to sustain us. Foundational to all truth is a belief in an unchangeable God. God is as He always has been and ever will be. There can be no absolute truth in life without an absolute and unchanging God. God will never fail to be who He is in us. He is the great I AM who dwells in us as we live in Christ.

What God has spoken is absolute and never changes. God says what He means and means what He says. It is a binding today as the day it was given. We may not understand it all, but our lack of understanding does not change the truth of it all. We must strive to learn and live what we can and believe the rest by faith because it comes from God.

Shout the message loud and clear. Don’t put your trust in the beauty of the flesh. It grows old and soon passes away. Don’t think that the life you now know will last forever. Put your trust in God and His Word which are eternal and never change.

Jim Hughes

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

So that men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely He is God who judges in the earth.”  – Psalm 58:11 NKJV

Devotion

Our verse for today assumes something about the world that we live in. It assumes that there is a moral order to the world. Over and above the affairs of human beings there is a moral order established by God. Furthermore, He governs everything that we say and do according to that order. The world, to put it another way, does not exist in isolated independence. It is not only a world dependent upon God for its very existence, but it is also a world governed by Him in every respect. Nothing is left to chance. Fate has no say in what happens. The Lord governs the affairs of human beings.

This means, among other things, that God judges what happens on earth. The wicked can’t just do whatever they want to do, however sinful and evil, and expect to get away with it. They can’t rob, cheat, steal, murder, betray, etc. and expect no consequences for their actions. It’s not up to them. Their fate doesn’t depend upon their skillfulness and savvy in the avoidance of a just comeuppance. Sooner or later, God will see to it that the moral order is satisfied. Sooner or later, justice and fairness will be meted out by the one that has established the moral order.

It also means that there is a reward for the righteous. The moral order of God is not just a standard by which to judge the wicked. It is also a standard by which to reward the righteous. True, no one in this dispensation lives in sinless perfection. Nevertheless, the righteous, that is, those in right-standing before God, are rewarded by Him for their righteousness. It pays, in other words, to be on the good side of God. Sooner or later, the righteous will reap the benefits of their good deeds. Sooner or later, the favor and advantage they receive from God will be clear for all to see.

Don’t deceive yourself into thinking anything different. Don’t deceive yourself into thinking that there is no moral order and that there is no judgement or reward. Instead, accept what the Apostle Paul says:

“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” (I Timothy 4:8)

crossIs. 36:10 What’s more, do you think we have invaded your land without the LORD’s direction? The LORD himself told us, “Go and destroy it!”

What strikes me here is that not everyone who claims to have direction from the Lord does. Israel was under attack and the invading army was pressing in on Jerusalem. The leader of the army was trying to convince the king to surrender. He boasted of his military might and then he declared that God had sent him to destroy the city where His people dwelt.

We need to be careful whom we listen to. Not everyone who claims to speak for the Lord does. Words can be very convincing. It is imperative that we be discerning. It is important that one gets to know the heart of man before he buys into what he hears. It is important that we always evaluate what we hear by what the Word says. And by the way, in order for us to know what the Word really is saying, we must be in sync with the Holy Spirit. Proper understanding comes from a heart that is right with God. Sin distorts truth so he who wants to hear from God must not allow sin to dwell in the heart.

Don’t be persuaded by flowery speech or the appearance of man. Don’t let anyone deceive you. Accept what you hear on your knees before God. Seek His affirmation before you accept what you hear. The Lord never contradicts himself or violates His holiness. Never. If the Word consistently affirms the message and the message leads to holiness of life, then it truly comes from God.

If you are right with the Lord, you will be able to discern truth from error. It’s all the more reason why we must stay diligent in our pursuit of holiness and diligently watch over our souls. We dare not let anything in that may cause us to be led astray from God. Let God’s Word be your shield and protector. Listen first and foremost to what God says before you accept what man says.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!  – Psalm 32:11 NKJV

Devotion

Maybe you don’t feel very happy about things at the present time. Maybe the trials, troubles, tribulations, and persecutions of life have gotten to you and brought you down. If so, then consider this: There is at least one thing that you can be happy about. Indeed, there is at least one thing that can make you glad and make you rejoice. It’s the Lord. Despite what’s bringing you down, despite what’s making you unhappy, you still have a relationship to Him. You can be glad and you can rejoice because you’re on the good side of God.

You’re on the good side because you’re righteous. That is, you’re in right-standing with Him. You’re willing to come before Him and confess your sins and receive His forgiveness. (Psalm 32:5) You’re willing to serve Him. Instead of acting like an unbroken horse, instead of acting like a stubborn mule, you’re willing to do the things He wants you to do. The Lord won’t have to harness you with bit and bridle and force you to go where He wants you to go. (Psalm 32:9)

Despite any unhappiness you may be experiencing, then, there is cause for great rejoicing. In point of fact, there is cause for shouts of joy! You’ve been accepted by the Lord God Himself. You have hope for the future. You have hope for the here and now and for the life to come. Instead of keeping this cause for joy inside of you, instead of merely holding it in your heart of hearts, there is reason to shout it out loud. There is reason to shout it out loud in song: “Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Psalm 96:1)

After all, it’s the kind of thing those in right-standing with the Lord do. It’s the kind of thing the upright in heart are more than willing to do. You don’t hold back your confession. You don’t hold back your service and obedience. Your shouts for joy, as a result, should not be held back either.Instead, you should release them into the public domain. You should release them where others can see and hear what your relationship to the Lord means to you.
