Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 9/30/2019

crossIs. 65:17-19 “Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth—so wonderful that no one will even think about the old ones anymore. Be glad; rejoice forever in my creation! And look! I will create Jerusalem as a place of happiness. Her people will be a source of joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and delight in my people. And the sound of weeping and crying will be heard no more.”

There are better days coming! The Lord has a plan for us that far surpasses anything we have ever known. He is creating a new heaven and a new earth. The process has already begun. When the time is right and the process is complete, it shall be put in place. This new heaven and earth will be so wonderful that every memory of this earth and life will be wiped from our memories.

In that day there will be so much joy that our praises will fill the new heaven and earth forever and ever. There will be nothing there that will ever make us sad or weary again. Happiness will be everywhere. Everyone there will be a delight to be around. Everyone will get along with everyone else. There will be no pecking order, no selfish ambitions, no self promotions, no using of anyone for personal gain.

In that day the Lord will take great delight in us. He will be able to walk freely amongst us because there will be no more sin in us. His presence will be seen and felt everywhere. There will be perpetual joy and happiness, no more weeping and crying will come from us. There will be nothing there that could ever cause us to be sorrowful or grievous of heart again.

What a wonderful place the Lord is preparing for us! He is working today to prepare us so we will be fit to dwell there. Don’t hinder the work of the Lord in you to change you and make you holy. He loves you so much and wants to make sure you don’t miss out on the place He is preparing for you. Let Him have his way with you.

Jim Hughes

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me…  – Psalm 19:13 NIV

Devotion

There are willful sins, as mentioned in our verse for today, and there are hidden sins, as mentioned in the previous verse: “But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.” (Psalm 19:12) David wants to be free from both kinds of sin.

Hidden sins, on the one hand, are not just the ones that are hidden from other people. They are also the ones that are hidden from the person who commits them. That’s why David asks, “But who can discern their own errors?” There are times when we hide our sinfulness, even from ourselves. David wants to be free from them and forgiven of them, even though he may not be fully aware of them. He doesn’t want to go through life with hidden sins dragging him down.

Willful sins, on the other hand, are sins that are deliberately and openly committed. They are sins that are committed primarily due to a shameless kind of pride and arrogance. The willful sinner has a foolish self-confidence and reliance on himself or herself that affords them permission to sin. The assumption they seem to have is that they are exceptions to the rule. The assumption is that they, or whatever endeavors they’re involved with, are important enough to justify the sin. In their minds, other people should be called to account for committing willful sins, but not them.

As said, David wants to be free from both kinds of sin. He doesn’t want sin of any kind to rule over him. Sin can actually do that. It can rule and dominate a person. It can turn people into slaves. Indeed, apart from Christ, the Apostle Paul tells us that we are all slaves to sin. (Romans 6:20) When we become Christians, however, we are set free from the slavery of sin. That’s why Paul can say, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

Let us all, then, confess and renounce our hidden and willful sins and seek forgiveness for them. (I John 1:9) Let us all, along with the Apostle Paul, stand firm in our freedom from sin.

Treasury of David

Treasury of David

This work was first published in weekly installments over a twenty-year span in the London Metropolitan Tabernacle’s periodical, The Sword and the Trowel.

Completed sections were released volume by volume, until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. Within a decade more than 120,000 sets had been sold. The Treasury of David is a superb literary achievement. Eric Hayden, pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle a century after Spurgeon’s ministry began there, calls this work “Spurgeon’s magnum opus.” Spurgeon’s wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial.

crossIs. 65:6 “Look, my decree is written in front of me; I will not stand silent; I will repay them to the full! Yes! I will repay them.”

The Lord is speaking here to the Israelites. He is warning them about what to expect when He is ignored. The Lord will not stand silent. He will mete out justice when man sins against Him. The Lord may seem to be silent while the world is living in sin, but be assured, He will judge sin in the world. The Lord has never failed to keep His Word and never will. No one gets away with sinning against God. NO ONE.

Before man was ever created, God knew that most would reject Him. He knew that there would be those who would follow after the wickedness of their hearts and spurn Him. He decreed in heaven that those who reject Him and lived in sin would pay in full the price for their rebellion. Because the Lord loves us He created us with the freedom to accept or reject His love. He longed for a people who would love Him in response to His love. He has so much love to give and considered man was worth the investment of His love. Yet, because He is holy He cannot ignore the sinful heart. He cannot accept into His presence any sin whatsoever. Those who live and die in sin must spend eternity in hell for man’s soul never dies.

The next time you are tempted to sin, remember this truth. The Lord knows all about every sin you commit or propose to commit. He knows every sin in your heart and mind and He holds you responsible for them. The only way you are going to avoid paying the price for them is through the shed blood of Christ on the cross. You have no hope for God’s mercy apart from the righteousness of Christ given to you on the cross. Jesus is the only way you can be forgiven and avoid God’s wrath against your sin.

If you know Jesus today as your Savior, praise Him for His salvation and for protecting you from God’s judgment. If Jesus is not your Savior, run to Him right now while you can. Confess your sins before Him and ask Him for His forgiveness. He will forgive anyone who comes to Him with a sincere heart.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.  – Ephesians 4:19 NIV

Devotion

In his instructions to the Ephesian Church, the Apostle Paul says, “I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do.” (Ephesians 4:17) What was wrong with the Gentile way of life in Paul’s mind? He says, “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” (Ephesians 4:18)

As a result of this hardening, Paul goes on to say in our verse for today, they have lost all “sensitivity” and they have given themselves over to “sensuality.”

What does this mean?

First of all, they have lost all sensitivity. They have lost, that is, all sensitivity to anything outside of their own selfish wants and desires. They have lost, for example, all sensitivity to the Lord God and what He wants from them and expects of them. Paul says elsewhere, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21)

They have also lost all sensitivity to the people around them, to the creatures below them, and even to their own true selves. Due to their hardened hearts, they have lost all sensitivity to the way things should go in all of the relationships they have in life.

Secondly, they have given themselves over to sensuality. They have given themselves over, that is, to the selfish indulgence of their sinful selves. Insensitive to everything and everyone around them, even to their own true selves, all that is left is to cater to their selfish desires. This is more than sexual lust. It includes, as Paul says, “every kind of impurity,” even greed.

Although we used to live like the Gentiles live before we became Christians, Paul says that we should live that way no longer. We should give up our sensual instincts and become more sensitive. We should give up every sensual desire to indulge the sinful self that may still be lurking within us and, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we should become sensitive to those around us, especially to the Lord God.

The Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon

by Russell Sherrard

Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon

In publishing the life of the late CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON, the publishers feel a peculiar pleasure and believe themselves especially fortunate in having secured the Rev. Russell H. Conwell, D.D., LL.D., pastor at The Temple, of Philadelphia, to prepare the work. There are many reasons why the popular preacher, who might justly be called the Spurgeon of America, should in this way pay a loving tribute to the memory of his great English ecclesiastical brother, and why such a book must have an absorbing interest for all readers. Foremost among these might be considered his personal acquaintance with the great divine of gigantic efforts and wonderful achievements, and the deep study he has ever given to his popular brother preacher’s life and the measure of its successes.

As a fellow-preacher of the Gospel, he knew better than any layman how to interpret the hidden springs of success to count the cost of Herculean efforts made, and better, understand the great man’s life-work in all its thousands of minute details which he, as an intimate personal friend had the opportunity to observe.

Like Spurgeon, he has the power to earn and raise large sums of money, but he devotes every dollar beyond a reasonable living expense to the cause he has so much at heart. His remarkable line of work, also, in many ways corresponds with that of Spurgeon,

The similarity in the work of the English Spurgeon and the American Conwell has often been commented upon by press and people. Spurgeon made, and Conwell is making, a complete sacrifice of talents, time and health to the one aim in life-the salvation of souls. Each commenced life a poor boy, and had an early life fraught with discouragements and temptations.

The author’s grand work for the Grace Baptist Church, of Philadelphia, has justly distinguished him as the greatest preacher of his denomination in this country. He was a student at Yale College, and graduated in the Law Department of Albany University and was admitted to the New York bar in 1865. His health not permitting the practice of law, he began as traveling correspondent of the Boston Traveler and the New York Tribune, during which his constant companion and warmest friend was Bayard Taylor, with who he traveled all over the world, and obtained distinction as a journalist.

In addition to the pastorate of a church which has one of the most remarkable houses of worship in the world, open every hour of every day and night in the year, and is never untenanted, Dr. Conwell is the head of Temple College, connected with the church fostered by him, which is for the free education of working-men and women in the classic collegiate branches, with fourteen professors, a preparatory department that sends pupils to Yale, Harvard and Amherst, and giving itself decrees equal to those of Princeton. He is the head of the Samaritan Hospital, also an outgrowth of his personal effort and example, which is doing incalculable good in Philadelphia.

In addition. to his church work, Dr. Conwell lectures all over the United States, to large and delighted audiences.

He is also a prolific author, The most important of his works are a ” Life of Garfield,” which he wrote at the home of the martyred President, in Mentor; “Why and How the Chinese Immigrate,” the material for which he gathered in the Chinese Empire Life of Hon. James G. Blaine,” Life of Bayard Taylor,” and “Acres of Diamonds,” each of which has been appreciatively read by thousands of readers in this and other countries.
