Verse of the Day and Devotion

Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.  – Proverbs 23:17-18 ESV

Devotion

Sometimes, you wondered if it would ever pay off. Sometimes, that is, you wondered if being a Christian would ever make any kind of sense. After all, didn’t sinners seem to be doing just fine? Didn’t they seem to have everything under control despite their wanton and willful ways? It took a while, but you finally had to admit that your heart wasn’t right. Like the psalmist, you had to admit, “I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:3)

You had to admit it because you finally came to your senses. Like the psalmist, you began to see that your envy was stupid and foolish, for it was sign that you had nearly lost your way: “But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.” (Psalm 73:2) It was a sign because, when you finally stopped to think about it, sinners are in a bad way. The Lord makes sure of that-“Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors.” (Psalm 73:18-19)

You, on the other hand, are in a good way, a very good way. Your feet are on a solid rock. (Psalm 40:2). Although things don’t always go the way you would like them to go, although you have trials and troubles of various kinds, you have a future that’s better than good. You have a future in this life and the life to come that’s good beyond measure. As a result, sinners should envy you, instead of you envying sinners. They should stop for once and take note of the solid rock you’re standing on as compared to the slippery slope they’re standing on.

Even more, no one can take your future away from you. As our verse for today says, “your hope will not be cut off.” The sinner’s hope is just a slippery slide from utter ruin, but your hope is kept in the safest place possible. It is kept in heaven for you. (I Peter 1:4)

It makes sense, doesn’t it? Continuing in “the fear of the Lord all the day” makes some real sense.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 10/28/2019

crossJer. 1:6-8 “O Sovereign LORD,” I said. “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” “Don’t say that,” the LORD replied, “for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and take care of you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Maybe you understand all too well Jeremiah’s lament. Maybe you too have been given a task to do by the Lord and all you can see is your inadequacies. Maybe you too have argued with the Lord and expressed why you can’t do what He has given you to do. Or, maybe others have so convinced you of how inadequate you are that you don’t see yourself as being able to serve the Lord beyond your comfort zone.

Hear the what the Lord is saying to you today. No matter what you, or others, may think about you, you ARE able to do what God is sending you to do. The Lord doesn’t not send His children out on their own to sink or swim. He goes with them to take care of them as they go. The Lord is with us to show us exactly what to do and how to do it. He is with us to strengthen us for the task set before us. He is with us to calm our fears as we step out in faith. He is there to empower us to so that we don’t quit because of the people who may oppose us. He is there to give us all the resources of heaven to use as we obey Him. There is no excuse for not doing what the Lord gives us to do.

The Lord told Jeremiah you MUST go. Jeremiah wasn’t told wherever he was to go or whatever he was to say; he was just told he must go. It’s not for us to decide the task or the details. We are just to obey. Now, we do have the option of not obeying, but as Jonah found out when he tried to not go and obey, the consequences aren’t so good. God never sends us out without a purpose or a plan on how to complete the task He sets before us.

When we obey the Lord it is good for our souls and good for those we are sent to. Don’t resist God’s will for you. Trust and obey Him. He will go with you and help you each step of the way to complete His will for your life.

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.  – Psalm 139:17 NLT

Devotion

Our Father in heaven is omniscient. He knows everything. It follows, as a result, that He knows everything about me. He knows everything about me because He keeps track of everything. That’s why the psalmist says, “The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” (Psalm 121:8) The wicked don’t like this because the wicked are always making futile attempts to escape from the presence of the Lord. (Psalm 139:7) The last thing they want is someone, least of all the Lord, to see what they do, to see the wicked things they do.

I, on the other hand, like the Lord to keep track of me. Indeed, it would be alarming to me if I ever suspected that the Lord had failed in this regard. After all, His thoughts about me are always for my benefit. I am His masterpiece, created anew in Christ Jesus, so that I can do the good things he planned for me long ago. (Ephesians 3:10) Even when I do wrong His thoughts about me are for my benefit, for He takes the steps necessary to make sure that I get back on track doing the good things He planned for me. (Hebrews 12:5-13)

Moreover, the Lord keeps watch over me as I come and go not only in the here and now, but also forever. (Psalm 121:8) His thoughts about me, in other words, will lead me to the place I need to be in the next life. Even in the eons to come on the new heavens and earth, I will never escape from the thoughts of my Good Shepherd.

Can you see how precious His thoughts really are? Can you see that what’s precious for me is just as precious for you? Just as there will never be a time when the Lord is not thinking about me, so there will never be a time when He’s not thinking about you.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 10/21/2019

crossJer. 1:4-5 The LORD gave me a message. He said, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world.”

What has the Lord appointed you to do? God made it very clear to Jeremiah that his life was no accident. God knew him before he came into being. God knew just how to orchestrate Jeremiah’s life so that he would be properly equipped to do what He had in store for him to do. God had a specific plan and purpose for Jeremiah’s life and He wanted him to know about his life’s purpose. Knowing what it is that God created him for would help Jeremiah to stay strong and true to the Lord throughout the many stormy times of his life.

Is every life orchestrated by God like Jeremiah’s was? I am not knowledgeable enough to speak authoritatively about that. I do believe that there are no accidental or mistaken human life. God gives each life a soul and they are born to have live in Christ and have fellowship with Him. We are created for God’s own good pleasure, but so few ever realize their purpose in life or find Him. Sadly, most fall into the darkness of sin and never find their way out. For those of us who do find our way out, we discover that God does have a plan for our lives and we prosper the best when we live it out.

God gives each of us all the tools we need to fulfill His plan for our lives. We are uniquely gifted to do what we do. No one can step into our shoes and be us. God makes available to us all the resources of Heaven to help us reach our potential. God assigns each of us a task to do and when do it we find real peace and contentment in life.

It is important for us to know what it is we are to do with our lives for the Lord. If you don’t know what your role is in the Kingdom of God, then you need to wait before Him until you do. You need to spend time studying and meditating on the Word. You need to spend time getting to know the Lord intimately. You need to open yourself up to the Lord and let Him have all of your heart. You need to give Him all of your resources and giftedness. When you give Him your all, the Lord will show you how to best serve Him and bless you as you do it.

voice. There is very little quietness in the church and in our lives today. We seem to be bent on drowning out God’s voice. We surround ourselves with noise to the point where we get nervous in the quiet. It makes me wonder if all the noise is meant to keep us from hearing from God like we should. I suspect that many of us do not want to hear God speak because we know that He would speak to us of sin. We entertain ourselves with the noise in the hopes that God won’t get
