Verse of the Day and Devotion

…”Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.”  – Luke 6:21 ESV

Devotion

Our verse for today is one of the Beatitudes listed in Luke 6. The Beatitudes were spoken by Jesus as part of His Sermon on the Mount. The word “beatitude” refers to a state of being abundantly blessed and extremely happy. The Beatitudes are declarations of blessedness over those who embody what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Each of them begins with a pronouncement of “Blessed” over those who embody a particular virtue disciples should have and then follows with the reason why those who embody the virtue are blessed.

One of the virtues of being a disciple of Jesus is that they weep. In what way can weeping be a virtue? Weeping can be a virtue because of what disciples weep about.

First of all, disciples weep about the sin that is still left in their lives. True disciples of Jesus are sorry for their sins. They don’t ignore them or take them lightly. When they stumble, they may not be cast headlong (Psalm 37:4), but they weep nonetheless because of what they have done. That’s why disciples confess their sins. They confess them because they want to get things right with God again. They want to be forgiven of their sins and they want to be cleansed of all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9)

Second, Disciples weep because of the trials, troubles, tribulations, and persecutions of life. Disciples are not indifferent to the struggles of life. They’re not Stoic philosophers trying to act as if they’re unaffected by it all. They weep because life this side of glory is full of pressures and afflictions that try the soul. They weep because they know it shouldn’t be this way and they work, as a result of their weeping, towards changing the way things are.

The good news is that those who weep shall laugh in the end. Weeping does not have the last word for disciples. Moreover, the laughter is not the frivolous laughter of the foolish, but the joyful laughter of the wise. The Apostle Paul said that he was “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.” (II Corinthians 6:10) And the Apostle John said that in the end the Lord will wipe away every tear from our eyes. (Revelation 21:4)

Today, there may be some weeping in your life, but, take heart, for “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)

Numbers: The Census of the People

Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch. It is named for the numbering of the people of Israel. However, it was known to the Jewish people as “In the Wilderness”, because it primarily tells of the forty years of wandering in the wilderness before entering the promised land. After the exodus from Egypt, the Israelites rebelled against God. Because of this rebellion, only two men of all the adults who left Egypt were to enter into the promised land of Canaan.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 11/25/2019

by Jim Hughes

crossJer. 4:3-4 This is what the LORD says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem, “Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Do not waste your good seed among thorns. Cleanse your minds and hearts before the LORD, or my anger will burn like an unquenchable fire because of your sins.”

The first thing we must consider today is, “Have we allowed our hearts to be hardened?” Before we answer this question, let’s pause for a moment and consider what that may mean to us. Our souls must be soft and pliable before God if we are to going to be right with Him. We must be like soft clay in a potter’s hands. We must be able to be molded and shaped in any way the Lord wants us to be. We must be willing to let Him get rid of all imperfections in our lives. We must be willing to be made into what the Lord wants us to be and not what we want to be. We must be willing to be used to serve His purposes and not our own. We must be willing to let Him determine what goes into our souls and not us. It takes concentrated effort on our part to stay soft and pliable because sin hardens the heart.
It contaminates the soul and prevents us from reaching our potential in the Lord’s hands.

We can prevent a lot of our sin problems by watching the company we keep. When we linger in the presence of sinners, sin often rubs off on us. We see and hear things that infiltrate the mind and conditions it to be accepting of sin. Like seed planted amongst thorns, our growth is often stymied and stunted. We lose our effectiveness as a witness and child of God.

We must take sin seriously and cleanse our hearts and minds of it. We may not like it, but if we want to live holy lives, we must do it. We must confess our sins and change our ways. We must be willing to change what entertains us. We must be willing to change what we think about. We must be willing to change everything that hardens our hearts towards God.

The alternative is not very good. God’s anger is poured out on those who refuse to repent and be softened before Him. God does not spare the soul from Hell who will not strive to live free from sin. He is gracious and forgiving towards those who sincerely try, but to those who don’t, He has no mercy.

Are you letting sin into your soul to harden it? Get rid of it while you can before it sets in place permanently and makes you the object of God’s wrath.

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Verse of the Day and Devotion

“I will give you every place where you set your foot as I promised Moses.”  – Joshua 1:3 NIV

Devotion

After Moses died, Joshua the son of Nun took over the leadership of the people of Israel. The Lord told him to lead the people across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land. (Joshua 1:1-2) Then He spoke the words of our verse for today: “I will give you every place where you set your foot.” After spelling out the limits of the Promised Land, the limits of the place where Joshua could set his foot, the Lord also said that no one would be able to stand against him and that He would always be with him. All Joshua had to do was to be strong and courageous. (Joshua 1:4-6)

Like Joshua, you have tasks that the Lord wants you to accomplish in life. He has placed you in various leadership roles and He expects you to carry out the assignments He has given to you in those areas. In effect, He’s giving you every place where you set your foot in those areas. Like Joshua, He has also promised that He will back you up. No one will be able to stand against you and steal your authority away from you. He will always be with you to help you. All you need to do is to be strong and courageous.

Like Joshua, the Lord expects you to keep moving forward. If He’s giving you every place where you set your foot in the various areas of your calling and responsibility, then you have to move forward and set your foot in them. That is, you have to move forward in the various areas and take up the responsibility of bringing the Lord’s will to bear in them. Within the limits of your calling and authority, you have to move forward and establish what the Lord wants you to do. You’ve not been called to do whatever you want. You’ve been called to effectuate the will of the Lord.

Like Joshua, then, you can’t stop. Stopping is the failure to set your foot. Stopping is the failure to take on your callings and responsibilities. It is, clearly, tantamount to disobedience. You may not always move forward at a brisk place. You may not avoid every obstacle or set-back. But you must always keep moving forward taking territory for the Lord.

Set your foot!

Leviticus: Keep My Decrees and Follow Them

The third book of the Pentateuch takes its name from one of the 12 sons of Jacob, Levi, whose family was chosen by God to act as priests and assistants in the Tabernacle. The book covers the national and personal laws given by God to the Jewish people regarding worship and religious activities. It contains laws regarding cleanliness, morality, ethics and hygiene which guided the Jews on a day–to–day basis and still does today. Animal sacrifice was introduced as a covering for the individual and national sins of the people.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 11/18/2019

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

crossMatt. 1:18-24 Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her finance’, being a just man, decided to break the engagement quietly, so as not to disgrace her publicly. As he considered this, he fell asleep, and an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary. For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him, Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Just like Mary, his fiancé’, Joseph’s heart was troubled. First of all, he too was visited by an angel, but his was in a dream. Some speculate that it was Gabriel who visited him as well, but the Scriptures do not tell us that it was him. For much the same reason as Mary, Joseph did not expect to be visited by an angel since no one had had any visible connect with God in Israel for the past 400 years.

Joseph was troubled as well by the news that Mary was now pregnant. As a young, righteous man, this indeed would have been troubling news. Everything he thought he knew about Mary was now up in the air. “How could she have done this to him? Who was she with? Why did she do it? Or, was it rape? Was it a one-night stand?”

He knew the Law. Mary deserved to be stoned to death. But…., he loved her! What could he do to protect her? Could he put her away quietly? Mary was a godly woman. “Why, Mary?” With a broken heart he had to have pondered these things. Disappointed, disillusioned, discouraged, defeated, who could blame Him?

But Gabriel quieted Joseph’s heart. “Joseph, things aren’t as they appear to be. Yes, Mary is pregnant, but this is of God and not man. Mary is going to have a child, not just any child, He is the Messiah, the one you and the nation of Israel have been looking for for so many years. His name will be Jesus, for He will save the world from its sins. Joseph, all that is happening now with Mary is the fulfillment of the Scriptures. He is Immanuel, God with us.” Joseph listened to this message from God and took it to heart. He did not send Mary away. He did not ask her all kind of questions. He simply did any righteous person would do; he yielded to God’s will and took Mary as his wife.

We can learn much from Joseph and Mary and how they prepared their hearts for the birth of Jesus. As we each celebrate Christ’s birth in our own unique ways, let us take the time to prepare our hearts for this very special celebration. Jesus is the reason we have the season. He is God with us, our Immanuel. He is our only source of lasting love, joy, peace and hope. O come, let us worship Him, Christ the Lord.
