The Point is … Shining The Light 4/16/2020

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Matthew 5:14

Joe was anxious as he walked into the jewelry store to shop for an engagement ring. He had been saving for months to buy the perfect ring to give to Carol. Joe and Carol had been dating for years. He did not doubt that she was his forever love. Still, he was concerned about the ring. He thought, “It must be perfect.”

As Joe looked through the glass counter at a tray of beautiful rings, a salesman walked over and said, “I see you are looking for an engagement ring. I have a fine selection of diamond rings.” He reached behind the counter and handed Joe a ring. The young man held it up to the light. The diamond was a quality stone, but Joe wasn’t impressed. The salesman handed him another ring, and then another, but none of them caught his eye.

The salesman pulled a black velvet pad out of a drawer and placed it on the counter. He took one of the rings out and delicately laid it on the black backdrop. When he did, all the light in the room seemed to pour through the stone causing it to shine as it had never shone before. Joe was dazzled. He had seen this very diamond ring moments earlier, but not like this. All the beauty of the precious stone was now dramatically enhanced and showcased for him to behold. Joe smiled and nodded his approval to the salesman. “That’s the one,” he said.

What changed Joe’s view of the ring? Why did the diamond, which only moments before had appeared so unimpressive, now sparkle like the stars above on a moonless night? In the jewelry business, the dark background makes the difference. When placed on a glass counter, the black velvet causes the light overhead to radiate brilliantly through the diamond, revealing its true beauty and causing it to sparkle and shine more brightly. Take away the black backdrop, and it is hard to see the diamond’s splendor. It is the darkness that causes the stone to burst forth with dazzling light.

We are living in dark days. The COVID-19 outbreak has the world in a hysteria. The death toll has been climbing around the world. People have now been diagnosed with the coronavirus in all fifty states. Schools and businesses are closed. The stock market has crashed, and the country is on the verge of a recession. The public is in a state of panic and many have resulted to hoarding. As a result, there is now a major toilet paper shortage in the United States. Many in the nation have become isolated and are living in fear. The days are dark indeed.

But if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, now is your opportunity to shine in the darkness. How should you shine? Let me suggest a couple of ways. First, you can pray. In this time of trouble, the world needs bold prayer warriors who will get on their faces and cry out to the Lord. Second, call and check on people, especially the elderly, those who have health concerns, and shutins. Many are feeling alone. A phone call from you will brighten their day. Third, if you can get out, take supplies to someone living in isolation. Take a bag of groceries to your neighbor. A small act of kindness like that means a lot in desperate times. Finally, share the Gospel. The answer to the darkness is the Light of the World. People need the Lord Jesus Christ.

The point is: The darker the night, the brighter the light shines. Pastor A.W. Tozer once said, “A scared world needs a fearless church.” Now is the time to shine like a diamond on a black backdrop. You and I should reflect His light in this dark world. Unless we tell others about Jesus, people will continue to wander in the darkness.

How bright are you shining?

crossJer. 21:8 Tell all the people, “This is what the LORD says: Take your choice of life or death!…”

Life is a choice. We do not choose whether or not we are born, but we choose whether or not we are born again. We alone can make the decision whether or not we will believe and accept Jesus as our Savior. No one can avoid making the choice. God has revealed himself sufficiently to everyone so that they can make a decision in their heart to believe in Him or not.

No one will miss out on heaven because they did not have a chance to believe in God. Each will be held responsible for the knowledge they have been given.

One of life’s greatest tragedies is when someone takes away or destroys the ability of another to choose. Every human being deserves the opportunity to choose whom he will serve and the type of life he will live. I believe God will hold everyone who robs another of their right to choose, whether it be by force or deception, responsible for it.

We also choose the type of life we live in Him. For some, Jesus in nothing more than a good fire insurance policy. For others, Jesus is Lord. We choose whether or not we live in victory or defeat. We have no one to blame but ourselves if we don’t allow Jesus to be Lord of our lives.

Every day we make choices regarding our eternal destiny. We choose whether or not we are going to sin against God or not. We choose whether or not we are going to learn more about what sin is so we can know what to do in order to please God. We choose what we are going to invest our lives in, the pleasures of earth or the pleasures of heaven. We choose and God holds us accountable for our choices. Choose to live life today in Christ. Choose to align yourself up with His holiness. It is the pathway to heaven.

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

The Point Is … Dead or Alive 4/9/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Preston asked, “Did you know that sometimes dead bodies will move?” I answered his question with a question when I said, “What are you talking about?” My friend Preston, who is a funeral director, said, “Sometimes bodies will have muscle contractions after they are dead. Sometimes a hand will quiver. Sometimes a face will twitch. Sometimes an eye might even blink.”

Over the years, I have been around a lot of dead bodies. In my ministry, I have been with people as they took their final breaths and I have preached hundreds of funerals. I have seen a lot of dead bodies, but I have never seen one move. So, I looked at Preston with a look of doubt.

Preston said, “Once, I was preparing a body, and I had to reach down under the table to get something. When I bent over, the hand of the dead man fell on my shoulder.” “Be honest with me, what did you do?” I asked. “I screamed my lungs out.” I said, “If that would have happened to me, there would have been two dead bodies!”

Even though a dead body may still twitch and move, dead bodies don’t come back to life. However, I have a personal relationship with a dead body that came back to life. The Lord Jesus Christ came back from the dead. Jesus is not shut up in a hole. He is sitting up in Heaven. Jesus is not rotting in a tomb. He is reigning on a throne. Jesus is not wearing grave clothes. He is robed in King’s Clothes. Jesus is alive.

This Sunday is Easter. I prefer to call it “Resurrection Sunday” because the resurrection is a vital component of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that the Gospel has three parts. First, Jesus Christ died on the cross for sinners. Second, He was buried. Third, He was raised from the dead according to the Scriptures. The true Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and when you rest your faith in the Gospel – in the Person and work of Jesus Christ – you experience a new birth and have a personal relationship with a Holy God.

The point is: The resurrection of Jesus Christ sets Christianity apart from all the world religions. Other religious leaders died, but only One came back from the grave and is alive forevermore. There is no other religious leader in history who was killed, who was buried, who rose from the dead and left behind an empty tomb. Not one. Confucius, Buddha, Muhammad, Joseph Smith, Charles Taze Russell, L. Ron Hubbard, Ellen G. White – none of them ever died, was buried, and rose from the dead. A dead man can save no one. Salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ is the only way.

Jesus is alive.

Do you personally know and boldly proclaim the living Savior?

Do you know my Jesus?

Get to know Him. Your eternal life depends on it.

crossJer. 20:7-9 O Lord, you persuaded me, and I allowed myself to be persuaded. You are stronger than I am, and you overpowered me. Now I am mocked by everyone in the city. Whenever I speak, the words come out in a violent outburst. “Violence and destruction!” I shout. So these messages from the LORD have made me a household joke. And I can’t stop it! If I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am weary of holding it in.!

The Lord persuaded me. Has the Lord ever persuaded you to do something for Him, maybe even something you did not want to do or thought you couldn’t do? If we are serious about our faith, there will be times in which the Lord will lay upon our hearts to do things. When He does, we then have a choice to make, do we do it or not?

Jeremiah let the Lord persuade him. He yielded himself to the will of God and did what God wanted him to do. We are not told, but I believe he did it without too much resistance. Jeremiah walked with the Lord and knew Him to be faithful. He knew God to be trustworthy and worthy to be obeyed. He loved the Lord and wanted to please Him. He understood the consequences of what it would be like if he did not obey God. He knew that it would be hard to live with himself for there would be no peace within his soul.

Jeremiah’s obedience did not make his life any easier. People mocked him and considered him to be a laughing stock in the community because he dared to proclaim God ‘s message to the people. Obedience often does come with a price. The world does not welcome those who take a firm Biblical stand and speak out against sin. The world does not want to hear from God or about Him and will often try to make life miserable for those who do. But, we need to be like Jeremiah; we need to be so consumed by our obedience to God that we cannot be silenced, no matter what.

Oh, but that the Word of God would have such a hold on us that it burns in our souls like fire! Oh, but that it would so consume us that we cannot hold it in, no matter how hard we try! The world desperately needs God’s children who will not stop proclaiming the Gospel to them. The world needs you and me to be consumed by the Word of God and set on fire by it. The coming of the Lord is soon and the harvest field is ripe. The day of salvation is almost past and the world is full of souls who are not saved.

“Lord, help us to care! Set a fire in us for the lost! Lord, when we read your Word, use it to fire us up. Use it to move us into action. Lord, do not let us sit idly by and wait for your coming. Send us out into the world with the Gospel message that souls may be saved while there still is time. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

The Point is … A Matter of Life and Death 4/2/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:10

Am I going to die?” he asked. I looked up from where I was sitting at his bedside and locked eyes with the doctor who was standing in the doorway. The expression on the doctor’s face told me his answer. “Yes,” I said.

The young man’s expression didn’t change. The doctor turned and left, his footsteps echoing down the hallway. The hospital room was silent except for the noise of the machines that were keeping the young patient alive.

For a moment, I thought he was asleep. I was startled when he asked, “What will happen when I die?”

“That depends.” I answered.

“On what?”

“On your choice. There are two options for where you go when you die: heaven or hell. You make that choice.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Well, you see, we have all done things wrong. We are all sinners. Our sin separates us from God. If we don’t do something about it, we will be separated from God forever in a place called hell. The Bible calls hell the ‘lake of fire.’”

“What can I do?”

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. You see, God became a man in the person of Jesus. He lived a perfect sinless life. He willingly sacrificed His life on the cross for you. His death paid the price for your sins. They buried Jesus and three days later, He rose from the dead. Because of what Jesus did, God offers you salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life as a gift that you must receive by faith. Just believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

Will I then go to heaven and not hell?

“Yes.”

My mom believed thatShe used to tell me that I needed Jesus. Do you really believe?”

Yes.”

I do too.

I took his hand and prayed with him. The next morning, he left this world.

In my years as a U.S. Army Chaplain, hospital chaplain, and pastor, I have witnessed many scenes like the one described here. I have watched as many people have died. I am familiar with the reality of death.

For perhaps the first time in the history of our nation, the reality of death is on everybody’s mind. The hysteria surrounding the coronavirus, or COVID-19, is causing most Americans to consider their own mortality. Our country is confused and scared.

As Christians, we have the answer to the fear that surrounds death. Right now, we have an opportunity to have conversations with nonbelievers about death and what happens when you die. We have an opportunity to share the truth of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The point is: Death is a reality we must all face. Whether we face death with fear or with confidence depends completely on if we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So, let me ask you: If you died tomorrow, would you go to heaven?

You had better be sure.

It’s a matter of eternal life and death.
