Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon

In publishing the life of the late CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON, the publishers feel a peculiar pleasure and believe themselves especially fortunate in having secured the Rev. Russell H. Conwell, D.D., LL.D., pastor at The Temple, of Philadelphia, to prepare the work. There are many reasons why the popular preacher, who might justly be called the Spurgeon of America, should in this way pay a loving tribute to the memory of his great English ecclesiastical brother, and why such a book must have an absorbing interest for all readers. Foremost among these might be considered his personal acquaintance with the great divine of gigantic efforts and wonderful achievements, and the deep study he has ever given to his popular brother preacher’s life and the measure of its successes.

As a fellow-preacher of the Gospel, he knew better than any layman how to interpret the hidden springs of success to count the cost of Herculean efforts made, and better, understand the great man’s life-work in all its thousands of minute details which he, as an intimate personal friend had the opportunity to observe.

Like Spurgeon, he has the power to earn and raise large sums of money, but he devotes every dollar beyond a reasonable living expense to the cause he has so much at heart. His remarkable line of work, also, in many ways corresponds with that of Spurgeon,

The similarity in the work of the English Spurgeon and the American Conwell has often been commented upon by press and people. Spurgeon made, and Conwell is making, a complete sacrifice of talents, time and health to the one aim in life-the salvation of souls. Each commenced life a poor boy, and had an early life fraught with discouragements and temptations.

The author’s grand work for the Grace Baptist Church, of Philadelphia, has justly distinguished him as the greatest preacher of his denomination in this country. He was a student at Yale College, and graduated in the Law Department of Albany University and was admitted to the New York bar in 1865. His health not permitting the practice of law, he began as traveling correspondent of the Boston Traveler and the New York Tribune, during which his constant companion and warmest friend was Bayard Taylor, with who he traveled all over the world, and obtained distinction as a journalist.

In addition to the pastorate of a church which has one of the most remarkable houses of worship in the world, open every hour of every day and night in the year, and is never untenanted, Dr. Conwell is the head of Temple College, connected with the church fostered by him, which is for the free education of working-men and women in the classic collegiate branches, with fourteen professors, a preparatory department that sends pupils to Yale, Harvard and Amherst, and giving itself decrees equal to those of Princeton. He is the head of the Samaritan Hospital, also an outgrowth of his personal effort and example, which is doing incalculable good in Philadelphia.

In addition. to his church work, Dr. Conwell lectures all over the United States, to large and delighted audiences.

He is also a prolific author, The most important of his works are a ” Life of Garfield,” which he wrote at the home of the martyred President, in Mentor; “Why and How the Chinese Immigrate,” the material for which he gathered in the Chinese Empire Life of Hon. James G. Blaine,” Life of Bayard Taylor,” and “Acres of Diamonds,” each of which has been appreciatively read by thousands of readers in this and other countries.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 8/31/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

crossDan. 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief official for permission to eat other things instead.

Daniel did not wait until he was faced with temptation before he decided whether to yield or not; he made up his mind before the temptation to sin ever came. What a powerful lesson for us to learn! In order to live victoriously, we must decide the course of our lives and stick to it.

We must determine that we are not going to put ourselves into tempting situations in the first place. We can’t avoid all temptations to sin, but we can help ourselves out a lot by choosing to not put ourselves into temptation’s way. Daniel knew that the way of the king was wrong for him. He knew that there was a better way and he chose it for himself, in spite of the consequences that may come from it. He knew that the king was in control and you obeyed him, or else, but that did not keep Daniel from choosing to do what was right before God.

We can avoid so many sins by determining in our hearts beforehand that we will do what we know God wants us to do regardless of what may happen. Others may not understand our choices, they may mock us, they may pressure us to back down, or they may try to make our lives miserable for us, but we must stand strong on our commitment to obey God and not man. We must be willing to give up the pleasures of the world and chose to obey God.

Don’t be wishy washy in this. Choose to be like Daniel and make up your mind right now that you will always do what is pleasing and acceptable to God. Before temptation strikes, determine in your heart that you will do what is right before God. It does not matter what others may think; it matters what God thinks. It does not matter what others may do; do what is right before God. You will stand before God someday and give an account for the choices you make.

About the Author:

Jim Hughes

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

The Point Is … Did You Hear That Voice? 8/27/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

“Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?”  Isaiah 42:23

I have been trying to learn to use my cell phone.

However, there are many buttons and apps – I have no idea what most of them do.

The other day, I saw my friend, Ida Ford, talking into her cell phone. But she wasn’t on a call. “What are you doing?” I asked. She said, “I’m using the voice command app. I talk, and the voice command types my text message.”

Ida showed me how the app worked and for the past few days, I have tried to use it. Yet, it doesn’t work right. It doesn’t understand my country, redneck accent.

Someone texted me and told me about a lady from church who was in the hospital. I replied with my voice command, “I hope she gets better. I pray she does.” Only it said, “I pray she dies.” That was not good…

Once I got the voice command activated, I couldn’t figure out how to turn it off. I got frustrated and said, “Baloney!” When I said, “Baloney,” the phone said, “Bologna is a city in Italy. It is also a cooked, smoked sausage.” I screamed, “I didn’t say Bologna. I said, Baloney!”

Later that day, I was at the dentist office with the phone in my pocket. As I was sitting in the waiting room, a voice said, “Say a command.” The lady at the reception desk looked up at me. I heard the voice again, “Say a command.” I realized the voice was coming out of my britches.

“Say a command.”

I took the phone out of my pocket, tried to turn it off, but it kept saying, “Say a command.”

“Say a command.”

“I command you to shut up!” I exclaimed.

I was called back to the exam room. I was sitting in the dental chair while the hygienist was cleaning my teeth. I couldn’t say anything because there was a suction hose, tooth scraper, polisher, waterpik, and seven or eight other dental tools hanging out of my mouth. I couldn’t have said anything if I tried.

Suddenly, I heard a voice say, “Did you say call Brian Poodle?” It said it again. “Did you say call Brian Poodle?”

I know Brian Williams, Brian Foster, and Brian Lane. However, I don’t know Brian Poodle. I know some wiener dogs, and a schnauzer, but I don’t know a poodle.

Frustrated, I finally reached in my pocket and turned off that stinking thing. I was tired of hearing the voice. So, I turned it off.

Often, we do the same thing.

Young people get tired of listening to their parents. So, they turn them off.

In church, people get tired of listening to the preacher. So, they turn him off.

You get tired of listening to the Word of God. So, you turn it off.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 8/24/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

crossEzek. 37:4-6 Then he said to me, “Speak to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the LORD! This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Look! I am going to breathe into you and make you live again! I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

I don’t know about you, but I would have loved to have been a witness to this event. God told Ezekiel to speak to a bunch of dry bones! I have spoken to a bunch of people like that over the years. People do dry up spiritually. There are some churches today who have been spiritually dry for a long time. It doesn’t usually happen overnight. It happens when the Word of God ceases to be the life food for the soul. It happens when the church stops praying together for one another and others. It happens when the church becomes more of a social gathering than a worship gathering. Regardless of how it happens, people and churches dry up spiritually.

The message God told Ezekiel to preach was THE WORD OF GOD. It is the only remedy for dried up souls. The Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb. 4:12). It pierces deep into the soul and roots out sinful deeds and thoughts. It gives hope to the dried up soul. When God speaks, exciting things begin to happen! The Lord’s message was that He was going to breathe life into the dead bones and give them life. He can, because He is the source of all life.

The Lord goes on to declare that not only would the bones be given life, they would be given an abundant life. They would be clothed with flesh, muscles and skin. This reminds us that there is so much more to life than just life; there is an abundance! God provides all that we need to have life and so much more. He equips us with all we need to live and serve Him. We are not given life to stand around or to sit and vegetate. We are blessed to know that He is Lord of life and to live to honor and serve Him.

Has your soul dried up? Do you need a fresh breath of God on you? Get alone with the Lord and ask Him to breathe into you some fresh air. Ask Him to take away from you all those things that have caused you to dry up. Make a vow to the Lord today to let Him change you so that you might live again the abundant life He came to give you.

The Point is … Mowing Like a Madman 8/20/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

“The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

Many years ago, my wife and I owned a home in Oklahoma that sat on ten acres of land. There is a drawback to having that much land. It must be mowed. Over the years, I tore up two or three riding lawnmowers trying to keep the grass and weeds cut back.

One day, I had an idea. I decided to put a belly mower on a tractor. I went to the John Deere Dealership and purchased a tractor. It was a 75-horsepower turbo diesel.

By itself, the tractor was powerful. Then I rigged up a 72-inch lawn mowing system with six cutting blades. It became even more powerful.

When I started the mower, it made a powerful noise. VROOM! All the cats in the neighborhood took off running. It was awesome!

One day, I was out on my souped-up tractor. My wife, Amanda, was out in the yard supervising me. She yelled over the noise of the tractor engine, “Be careful, that contraption has a lot of power.” I screamed back, “I’m a grown man. I know what I’m doing.”

The tractor was incredibly powerful. As I was mowing, it was cutting down everything. Pieces of grass and weeds were flying all over the place. A cloud of clippings, shavings, and dirt rolled out from behind the mower. It was powerful. I accidentally ran over several fruit trees. Branches, leaves, and smoke flew everywhere. It was intense!

We had a little concrete yard gnome. I wasn’t paying attention. I ran over the gnome. Chunks of concrete and dust flew all over the yard.

My wife and I had two different reactions. She said, “Oh no!” I said, “Oh yes! That was the coolest thing that I have ever seen! I can get her another yard gnome, but that was powerful!”

To this day, I still can’t explain all the workings of a John Deere 75-horsepower turbo diesel tractor with a 72-inch belly mower. I just know when I pushed the gas pedal, a wind blew that I can’t describe. I just know it was exciting.

The Spirit of God is powerful and exciting. Anything of eternal value comes through the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. You can’t live the Christian life in your own power. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to get the job done.

The point is: Just like that tractor, I can’t describe the Wind of God. I just know when the Wind blows in, it sure is exciting. When the Holy Spirit blows in, God blows sluggish saints off their seats, God blows sleeping souls down the aisle, and God saves the lost. When the Holy Spirit blows in, God blows away self-centeredness, God blows away self-righteousness, God blows in revival.

It is my prayer for the Wind to blow. Will you join me in praying for the Holy Spirit to blow revival into our world, into our nation, into our state, and into our community? Will you join me in praying for the Holy Spirit to blow revival into our hearts?

Lord, send a great revival, and let it begin in me.
