The Point Is … Periodically 10/29/2020

by James Collins

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

understand people today don’t believe in spanking kids, but I was raised in a different time. Spanking was a daily occurrence for me.

Corporal punishment was still in the public-school system when I was growing up. I used to get spankings at school. At my school, they used the board of education. They used a wooden paddle.

When I was in the eighth grade, we were studying the periodic table of elements in science. I struggled memorizing the periodic table. I was as lost as a goose in a snowstorm.

Who came up with those abbreviations anyway? Some of them made sense. For example, hydrogen is H. Oxygen is O. But some of them don’t make any sense. Take potassium for example. Potassium is K. There isn’t even a K in the word potassium. Sodium is NA. I thought NA meant “not applicable.” Silver is AG. Isn’t AG the abbreviation for agriculture?

In the eighth grade, I could not remember the periodic table for the life of me. There was a big test over the periodic table coming up. So, I decided to cheat. I took an ink pen that was made of clear plastic. I copied out the entire periodic table on a very small piece of paper. Then I rolled up the piece of paper and put it inside the pen. All I had to do was look at the pen for the test answers.

My plan would have worked if not for my cousin, Bubba. Bubba’s real name was Jimmy Joe Jeff Johnny Paul Ray Elmer Junior. But that was a mouthful. We called him Bubba. Bubba was in Mr. Alford’s Science Class with me. He was sitting in the desk behind me on the day of the test.

When the test started, things were going great. I was filling in all the blanks on the test thanks to the periodic pen. Suddenly, Bubba whispered, “What’s the abbreviation for Mercury?” I tried to ignore him because I didn’t want to get caught.

He was persistent. He asked again louder, “What’s the abbreviation for Mercury?” I still didn’t answer.

Finally, Bubba stood up and said, “Mr. Alford, my pen quit writing. Can I borrow James’ pen?”

Mr. Alford walked over, took the pen, and marched me out into the hall. Mr. Alford had my pen in one hand and the paddle in the other. It was a bad day after that.

I cheated, got caught, and had to pay the price.

The point is: There are consequences when we sin. When we disobey God, there are consequences. God is just and because He is just, He must punish sin.

The Bible says the wages of sin is death. For the lost, it means death in hell. For the Christian, it can mean physical death pre-maturely. Sometimes God will kill a Christian if that person loses his testimony and lives like a non-Christian. Sin brings physical death.

Sin can also bring death to your marriage, to joy in your life, and to your relationships. Sin destroys. Sin kills.

However, God has given us a gift. God gave us His Son, Jesus Christ. Eternal life is waiting for those who call on Him in repentance for salvation. Get off the path that leads to death. Get on the highway to Heaven. Turn to Christ today.

by Staci Stallings

Somethings Not Right

Somethings Not Right

“Something’s Not Right” is the book I never thought I would write. It is our family’s story of our journey through the confusing, confounding maze that is dyslexia. Deeply personal, “Something’s Not Right” walks the reader through each step we took to find solutions for my son’s dyslexia.

If you are a parent with a child who either has dyslexia or a child who is struggling to read or to succeed in school, then this is the book for you. It will give you practical solutions to the vexing problems your child faces every day. It will help you understand the underlying issues, and it will help you navigate your way to finding actual help in a sea of questions that oftentimes make as little sense to you as they do for your child.

Don’t struggle anymore! Dyslexia is not the permanent death of success it seems to be. It’s time to break free and help your child become the amazing kid God made them to be. There are answers, and this book is the place to start!

Genesis: Book of Beginnings
(Journey Through the Bible 1)
by Russell Sherrard
Genesis: Book of Beginnings

Genesis: Book of Beginnings

This book is a Bible Study of the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for this study is the King James Version (KJV). This Book is the first book in the Series entitled Journey Through the Bible.

This book is a Study Guide for the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for the study is the King James Version (KJV). It is fitting that we should start with Genesis, which is the book of Beginnings. Genesis: The Book of Beginnings is the first book in this series of Journey Through the Bible.

Genesis means “the beginning” and it is a book of beginnings. It records the creation of the world and the beginning of the nation of Israel. Chapters 12-50 focus on one man, Abraham, and his descendants. Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob are called the patriarchs of Israel. Jacob’s twelve sons are the beginnings of the twelve tribes of Israel. Through Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, the whole family settles in Egypt.

The word Genesis means origin or creation. Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, is a book of beginnings. It has been said that every major doctrine has its seed or beginning in Genesis. For example, the material universe, the human race, sin, the promise of the Messiah, languages and the Hebrew nation all have their beginnings in the book of Genesis. For this reason Genesis is called the seed pot of the whole Bible. Every great fact, truth and revelation is found in this book in germ form. The book of Genesis is essential to the understanding of all the other books of the Bible.

Moses wrote the book of Genesis about 1500 years before Christ. Moses received the oracles directly from God. They were not handed down by word-of-mouth (Acts 7: 37, 38). God can just as easily tell a person the past as he can the future. The book Genesis covers a time period of nearly 2500 years, from the Creation to the journey of Israel into Egypt.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 10/26/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

crossHosea 10:12 Plant the good seeds of righteousness and you will harvest a crop of my love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and shower righteousness on you.

When you live in righteousness you will naturally be a loving person. You cannot be right with God and not inherit His love nature. No matter how well you may be able to live righteously by man’s standards, if you are not loving, you are not living righteously by God’s standards.

Hosea spoke to a people who based their righteousness on how well they were able to live by God’s law. God made it very clear what they must do in order to be right with Him. What ended up happening was that when they lived by the law they failed to love one another and legalism without love creates a hard heart. Hosea’s admonition was for them to plow up the hardness of their hearts. Obedience to God must be done for the right reason. What we do must flow from hearts of love, not duty.

If you are not motivated by love for the Lord in what you do, now is the time to do something about it. Continuing on without love makes the heart hard towards God. No matter how much good you are doing, if love is not behind it, you do it in vain. God knows your heart and whether or not your motivation in doing what is right is love and He will hold you accountable for your motivation. If you want to be sure your heart is right with God, take a bath in His love. He will shower you in His righteousness and all will be well with your soul.

Loving God overshadows everything we do. It affects not only our standing with God, it affects our relationships with others. We cannot love God without loving people. We cannot live righteously with uncaring souls.

Now is the time to examine your soul. Now is the time to seek the Lord. Now is the time to make sure that loving God is the driving force in your life. Now is the time to live righteously before God. Tomorrow may never come and if you don’t do it now, it may be too late.

The Point Is … Better Late Than Never 10/22/2020

by James Collins

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16

Over the years, I have been blessed to receive many letters from readers. Many of those letters asked questions. One reader wrote, “Dear Pastor James, you are without a doubt the biggest pinhead on the planet. Who told you that you were a writer?” Signed, “Phillis Stein.”

Another reader wrote, “James Collins, you are a narrowminded bigot. Where do you get off by saying Jesus is the only way?” Signed, “Barry Cuwder.”

Another letter read, “We’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty. Why don’t you reply? Signed, “Otto Matik.”

One of my favorite letters said, “Dr. Collins, I’m sorry that I called you an idiot in my previous letter. I really thought you already knew. I could explain to you how stupid you are, but I can’t understand it for you. What university would be so moronic as to give you a doctorate?” Signed, “Rory Motion.”

This past week, I received a letter from Ladonna (not her real name). She wrote, “Dear Pastor Collins, I write today because I am confused. Many years ago, I made accusations against another person that were just false. It created a crisis that I am ashamed of today. Should I try to make it right after all these years or should I just leave well enough alone… I don’t want to make things worse or dig up old wounds. What should I do?”

This question is one that I have been asked often. Many Christians struggle with this issue. However, the Bible is clear that if you as a believer have wronged another believer then you need to attempt to make things right. God has given us a ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:19).

A few years ago, a woman named Dee felt something was missing in her life. So, she started coming to my church. Eventually, she gave her life to Christ. It was my privilege to baptize her. Whenever someone gets saved, it is a miracle of God. But Dee’s salvation was truly a miracle considering she was eighty-three-years-old. Most of the time, when someone reaches that age, life has hardened them to the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ.

One day Dee told me about her daughter, Joy. Dee had basically abandoned Joy when she was a child. They had not spoken to each other for almost fifty years. I encouraged Dee to call her daughter and apologize. Dee said the same thing to me that Ladonna said in her letter, “I don’t want to make things worse or dig up old wounds.” I said, “Jesus Christ can heal wounds even old ones,” as I handed her the phone. She called her daughter and apologized. She shared how Jesus Christ had changed her life. As they spoke, Joy put her faith in Jesus as Savior. She became reconciled with Jesus and with her mother. Now both Dee and Joy have peace with each other and peace with God.

The point is: When you confess and seek forgiveness from someone you have wronged, God provides opportunities for healing (James 5:16). By not seeking reconciliation, you feel sick with unforgiveness, anger, and shame. God through His Son and Spirit can heal you when you seek His help.

Why don’t you lean on God’s strength and reach out to that person and show them the love of Christ today?

Better late than never.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 10/19/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

crossDan. 9:4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed, “ O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfill your promises of unfailing love to those who love you and keep your commands.”

Do you really believe it? Do you believe that God always fulfills His promises of unfailing love to those who love Him and obey Him? Think about how you think about God when circumstances overwhelm you and He seems to not care. Be honest. Do you consider God loving you when things are going bad for you? Don’t you question the love of God for you when nothing seems to change for the better? After all, if God really loves, He would make sure everything went well for us, wouldn’t He?

We doubt God’s love because we can’t see the forest because of the trees. All we can see is the moment we are in, not the broader picture of our lives. We don’t see how the moment can be good for us in any way. We don’t see how God is going to use us the rest of our life journey and how our present circumstances are a part of our preparation.

We don’t see the good in the bad because we fail to remember what God says about himself. He is holy love and is incapable of acting in a non-loving way. Everything God does, or allows to happen in our lives, flows from love. He is incapable of doing anything wrong. We may not understand it at all, but it is true. In order to deal with life we must accept as absolute truth everything God says. All of God’s promises come to pass but, there is a condition if we are going to personally experience them.

We must love the Lord and obey Him. When we love the Lord we trust Him. We rest in the knowledge that what we are going through is noticed by God and is being used by Him for our good. We do not speak negatively of Him; instead we acknowledge Him, thank Him, and praise Him regardless of what we are experiencing. We continue to faithfully obey Him regardless of how we feel. God never fails us, but we do fail Him. God will see you through whatever you are going through if you love Him and obey Him.
