Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 12/28/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossAmos 8:11-12 “The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread or water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. People will stagger everywhere from sea to sea, searching for the word of the LORD, running here and going there, but they will not find it.”

The time is coming when there will be a famine on the land for hearing the Word of God. I believe that we are moving close to a famine right now. We live in a time where the Word of God is for the most part available to all. With the technology now in place, one can access God’s Word quickly and easily. Yet, just because it’s available doesn’t mean it’s being accessed. People are growing up with very little, if any, knowledge of the Bible. Wherever you go, you will find people ignorant regarding what the Bible says.

There are many churches today where the Bible is not used or even welcomed. As outrageous as it may seem, it is true. The Bible is considered to be archaic and unreliable. It comes under great scrutiny and is not taken seriously. Many church leaders rarely have a personal knowledge of, or appreciation for the Word of God. When the Bible is used, it is used to promote personal agendas. It is taken apart and out of context. In many church circles, the Scriptures are no longer taken literally. There is a real famine in the church today for the Word of God as God gave it.

People are staggering around, groping for meaning and purpose in life. They may be deeply involved in church life and spiritual activities, but they are starving to death. They are not finding life worth the living for; they have lost their way and don’t know how to find their way back. As a result, anything and everything seems to go in the name of Christ.

We must diligently protect God’s Word in us and in our churches. We cannot take a lackadaisical attitude about this. We must preach and teach only the Word of God in our churches and homes. We must insist on basing our faith on the Word of God instead of our activities. We must let the Word penetrate deep within our souls and captivate our minds. We must stand unwaveringly on the truth that the Bible IS the authoritative Word of God. Don’t starve your soul to death like so many do. God said what He meant and means what He said; strive to always live it.

About the Author:

Jim Hughes

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chaper on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

The Point is … Periodically 12/24/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

understand people today don’t believe in spanking kids, but I was raised in a different time. Spanking was a daily occurrence for me.

Corporal punishment was still in the public-school system when I was growing up. I used to get spankings at school. At my school, they used the board of education. They used a wooden paddle.

When I was in the eighth grade, we were studying the periodic table of elements in science. I struggled memorizing the periodic table. I was as lost as a goose in a snowstorm.

Who came up with those abbreviations anyway? Some of them made sense. For example, hydrogen is H. Oxygen is O. But some of them don’t make any sense. Take potassium for example. Potassium is K. There isn’t even a K in the word potassium. Sodium is NA. I thought NA meant “not applicable.” Silver is AG. Isn’t AG the abbreviation for agriculture?

In the eighth grade, I could not remember the periodic table for the life of me. There was a big test over the periodic table coming up. So, I decided to cheat. I took an ink pen that was made of clear plastic. I copied out the entire periodic table on a very small piece of paper. Then I rolled up the piece of paper and put it inside the pen. All I had to do was look at the pen for the test answers.

My plan would have worked if not for my cousin, Bubba. Bubba’s real name was Jimmy Joe Jeff Johnny Paul Ray Elmer Junior. But that was a mouthful. We called him Bubba. Bubba was in Mr. Alford’s Science Class with me. He was sitting in the desk behind me on the day of the test.

When the test started, things were going great. I was filling in all the blanks on the test thanks to the periodic pen. Suddenly, Bubba whispered, “What’s the abbreviation for Mercury?” I tried to ignore him because I didn’t want to get caught.

He was persistent. He asked again louder, “What’s the abbreviation for Mercury?” I still didn’t answer.

Finally, Bubba stood up and said, “Mr. Alford, my pen quit writing. Can I borrow James’ pen?”

Mr. Alford walked over, took the pen, and marched me out into the hall. Mr. Alford had my pen in one hand and the paddle in the other. It was a bad day after that.

I cheated, got caught, and had to pay the price.

The point is: There are consequences when we sin. When we disobey God, there are consequences. God is just and because He is just, He must punish sin.

The Bible says the wages of sin is death. For the lost, it means death in hell. For the Christian, it can mean physical death pre-maturely. Sometimes God will kill a Christian if that person loses his testimony and lives like a non-Christian. Sin brings physical death.

Sin can also bring death to your marriage, to joy in your life, and to your relationships. Sin destroys. Sin kills.

However, God has given us a gift. God gave us His Son, Jesus Christ. Eternal life is waiting for those who call on Him in repentance for salvation. Get off the path that leads to death. Get on the highway to Heaven. Turn to Christ today.

Holy Bible World English Version

The World English Bible is based on the 1901 American Standard Version English translation, the Greek Majority Text, and the Hebrew Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia with some minor adjustments made because of alternate readings found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Septuagint. These alternate readings are usually ignored or restricted to the footnotes. The translation process included seven passes of editing and proofreading for each book. An initial automated pass updated approximately 1,000 archaic words, phrases and grammatical constructs. The first manual pass added quotation marks (the ASV had none) and other punctuation and compared the translation to the Greek and Hebrew texts in areas where significant textual variants or meanings were

Book Spotlight

Journey through the Bible

(5 book series)

by Russell Sherrard

Journey through the Bible (5 book series)

Journey through the Bible (5 book series)

From Book 1: This book is a Bible Study of the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for this study is the King James Version (KJV). This Book is the first book in the Series entitled Journey Through the Bible.

This book is a Study Guide for the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for the study is the King James Version (KJV). It is fitting that we should start with Genesis, which is the book of Beginnings. Genesis: The Book of Beginnings is the first book in this series of Journey Through the Bible.

Genesis means “the beginning” and it is a book of beginnings. It records the creation of the world and the beginning of the nation of Israel. Chapters 12-50 focus on one man, Abraham, and his descendants. Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob are called the patriarchs of Israel. Jacob’s twelve sons are the beginnings of the twelve tribes of Israel. Through Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, the whole family settles in Egypt.

The word Genesis means origin or creation. Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, is a book of beginnings. It has been said that every major doctrine has its seed or beginning in Genesis. For example, the material universe, the human race, sin, the promise of the Messiah, languages and the Hebrew nation all have their beginnings in the book of Genesis. For this reason Genesis is called the seed pot of the whole Bible. Every great fact, truth and revelation is found in this book in germ form. The book of Genesis is essential to the understanding of all the other books of the Bible.

Moses wrote the book of Genesis about 1500 years before Christ. Moses received the oracles directly from God. They were not handed down by word-of-mouth (Acts 7: 37, 38). God can just as easily tell a person the past as he can the future. The book Genesis covers a time period of nearly 2500 years, from the Creation to the journey of Israel into Egypt.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 12/21/2020

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossAmos 8:5 You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out your grain in false measures and weigh it on dishonest scales.”

How consistent are you in your faith walk? Far too many who go to church on Sundays don’t show it on Mondays. There is the mindset in the church that going to church is good enough to get us into heaven, that it doesn’t matter too much what we do during the week as long as we go to church on Sunday.

I would much rather see someone who seldom goes to church on Sunday and live righteously than those who go to church on Sunday but live like the devil the rest of the week. Church is important as a means of strengthening and growing our faith, but it will not get us into heaven. Only the heart that is made righteous in Christ will enter into heaven. There is no sin in heaven and when we live in sin, we disqualify ourselves from it.

Words alone don’t cut it. A true child of God will live like a child of God all the days of his life. He will live obediently and faithfully before man and God. He will strive to live a holy life, shunning sin as much as possible. A child of God does not make excuses when he does sin. He admits it when he sins and repents of it. He strives to honor God in both words and deeds.

Regardless of when and where you worship the Lord, if your life doesn’t back up your worship, you worship is in vain. Living in Christ consumes the soul and affects every area of one’s life all the time. Always seek to do what is right in God’s eyes and you won’t have any problem making it to heaven when you die.

The Point is … The Broken Wise Man 12/17/2020

Send to Kindle

by James Collins

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Over the years, my wife, Amanda, and I have amassed a collection of Christmas Nativity sets. At the beginning of each Christmas season, we pull boxes out of storage and decorate the house. One of our sets is just a little more special than the others – the first one that I purchased for Amanda on our first Christmas as husband and wife.

This past year, I changed jobs and we had to move. One of the Wise Men figures in our special Nativity was broken in the move. When we brought the box out, we were sad to find the broken Wise Man. Somehow, the piece had been broken into two pieces. He was split in half.

At first, I thought about replacing him. I searched eBay and found a new one for a cost of fifty dollars. Fifty bucks is a lot of money and I’m cheap. I am so cheap, for example, that when Amanda once asked for diamonds for our anniversary, I gave her two of them… the eight and the queen.

Anyway, since I didn’t want to spend that much money, I decided to glue the Wise Man back together. The results were less than perfect. The glue held fine. However, there was an obvious defect. His paint had chipped away in the break. The Wise Man now had a crack running right through his midsection. He appeared scarred and flawed.

I placed the Wise Man into the scene next to his two companions. The three were bowed in homage facing the newborn Christ Child. I looked at Amanda expecting a frown. Instead, she smiled and said, “I love it. It’s perfect because we are all broken people.”

The point is: There is much wisdom in my wife’s words. We are all broken people. But God loves broken people.

Today, if you will turn from your sins, turn to Jesus, and ask for forgiveness, God will fix your brokenness. That is why Jesus was born. God loves you so much that He sent His Son. If you will put your faith and trust in Him, you will have life abundantly and eternally.

When I look at the broken Wise Man, I am reminded of God’s great love for me. He fixed my brokenness. He can fix you too.

That’s what Christmas is all about…
