Our interview today is with Keely Brook Keith. Thank you, Keely for being here today and for agreeing to do this interview.

Keely Brooke Keith

Question: Tell us a little about your real (Non-writing) life family, job, church life. Does it give you inspiration for your writing? Does it get in the way of your writing, or are there times when you get help, from people or circumstances?

Answer: My day job is in music–I’m a bass guitarist. I’ve been very blessed to get to live out both of my passions: music and writing. As far as my job getting in the way of writing–I love playing music and will continue no matter how busy the writing life gets, but it can be difficult for me to focus on writing while I’m on tour.

Question: Tell us about things you enjoy, what you do for fun or personal satisfaction?

Answer: I love being alone and writing, but as soon as I’m done I want to hang out with people. I love game nights, dancing, antiquing, and just being with friends and family.

Question: Tell us about working with any people who help you create your books. Do you use Beta readers? Hire an editor or proofreader? How do you get your covers?

Answer: I start involving other people in my writing during the second draft. That’s when I do the deep research and interview professionals in whatever field my characters and stories require. After several drafts, I start sending the story to beta readers. I’ll send it to a few at a time, get their comments, revise if I need to, then send to a few more. I have several critique partners who are also authors and their feedback is invaluable. When I believe the manuscript is the very best it can possibly be, I send it to a professional editor.

Question: Have you done anything writing-related, but besides your books, that seemed to get a lot of positive response? Something that encouraged you?

Answer: I started blogging about other authors and featuring other books. My blog followers really responded to that–especially the contests and giveaways that are often included. I would encourage all writers to get involved in the writing community.

Question: Tell us one place you visited or person you met, that made a big impression on you, and why.

Answer: When I was sixteen I was an exchange student to Australia. I’ve been back there several times since and I always love it–the coasts, the people, the animals, the rainforests, the bush. It’s breathtaking. The Australian Outback is one of those places where the setting becomes a character, so that definitely inspired me. I envisioned a lot of that while creating the Land in The Land Uncharted.

Question: What is your current WIP?

Answer: I’m currently writing Uncharted Inheritance, the third book in the Uncharted series, which is written with the feel of historical fiction, set like a scifi, and of course, there is romance. The first book, The Land Uncharted, will be released October 21, 2014. The second book of the series, Uncharted Redemption, will be released Spring of 2015. The series follows the three youngest siblings in the Colburn family–each book is one of their stories, so as the books progress you know the main character from the previous books, but you get to know them deeper. So there is a sense of familiarity, but also much to be explored.

Question: How many books do you have out?

Answer: The Land Uncharted is my debut novel.

The Land Uncharted

Question: Are their characters/stories/scenes/etc based on anything in real life?

Answer: No. I got all my character names from printing out my family history and taking first names from ancestors born before 1860. The last names are also from my family history but no first/last name combination is an ancestor’s actual name. The story is totally made up; in fact, if I started to write anything that reminded me of something I’d seen or heard, I immediately backed up and went in another direction.

Question: What is your favorite book/character?

Answer: The Sun Also Rises. Hands down my favorite book of all time, though I don’t particularly like any of the characters in it. Go figure.

Question: What is your writing style?

Answer: I’m a genre-blender. I enjoy the world creating that goes into speculative fiction, but I like to keep a sense of our reality. I love people and relationships and I always showcase a romance, but it’s not the A-plot. I like learning when I read, so I strive to use the best possible words when I write. If that sends a reader to the dictionary now and then, I think they’ll appreciate it.

Redemption Interview by Lillian Duncan

Send to Kindle

Tell us about REDEMPTION.

It’s the third and final book in my Sisters by Choice series. Well, probably last. I do have an idea for a fourth book rattling around in my brain, but it’s only an idea at the moment. Who knows if it will actually grow into a book?

Redemption brings the series full circle and gives closure for those who’ve read all three books. Jamie is the missing twin in the first book-DECEPTION. And in REDEMPTION, we come to learn more about Jamie and her spiritual struggles. But the main story is about a missing child who Jamie is determined to find—no matter the danger to herself.

What’s the setting for REDEMPTION?

This story is all over the place. It starts in Florida, then Jamie goes to Ohio and on to Wyoming and New Mexico—and not all of her own doing!

How did you come up with the title for REDEMPTION?

The story begins with Patti not understanding why her twin, Jamie, continues to place herself in serious jeopardy time and time again. Jamie doesn’t understand either. Only that she needs to help others if and when she can no matter the danger to herself.

As the writer I know why, and I’ll share the secret with you. Jamie is ashamed of things she’s done in her past. As a result she feels God can’t love her the way she is. So she seeks redemption by putting herself in dangerous situations to help other people.

But then I checked out the definition of redemption. defines redemption as an act of atoning for a fault or a mistake; deliverance or rescue; deliverance from sin; salvation; atonement for guilt.

Wow! As I look at those definitions, I realize REDEMPTION is full of all sorts of redemption for many of the characters in the story—not just Jamie’s. No wonder that’s the title I chose.

Why did you write REDEMPTION?

We only catch a brief glimpse of Jamie in DECEPTION and BETRAYED. REDEMPTION is Jamie’s story.

What do you want readers to take away from REDEMPTION?
God loves us no matter what we’ve done in the past or what we do in the present or will do in the future. His love is the one constant we can always count on!

Does REDEMPTION have a theme?

God loves us just the way we are and He is always there waiting for us to come to him.

What’s the SISTERS BY CHOICE series about?

This series definitely has romance in it, but I also wanted to explore the strong bonds that form between women—through blood or through the choices we make. Each story focuses on a relationship between two women that becomes as important to the story as the romantic plot.

Why did you become a writer?

I always had stories in my head waiting to be told. Unfortunately for many years those stories were only being enjoyed by me. One day a light bulb went off—hey, maybe I should be writing these stories down for other people!
That was the day a writer was born, but it took many long years until I could say, “I’m a writer!” Now, I love saying that.

What is your writing process?

I am not an outliner. I wish I were—it seems easier to me. But my mind doesn’t work that way. I never know what is going to happen in my story on any given writing day. It’s as if my mind is a movie screen and I watch that day’s events and then I write it.

When I start a new story I usually have a clear picture of the main character in mind and what obstacle he/she will face, but anything goes after that. If I’m writing and start to feel bored—then I kill someone or blow something up. And that way it’s a surprise to me and to my readers.

Do you know who the bad guy is when you begin your story?

Not usually. Most of the time I have several characters who it might be. As the story comes to a conclusion, I am surprised right along with my readers. REDEMPTION was no exception. I thought I knew who the bad guy was but as usual there were a few surprises!

Most people don’t think of murder mysteries and suspense novels as Christian Fiction. What do you say to them?

I can certainly understand their point of view. And for some readers my stories might be a bit too graphic or edgy and that’s all right. I understand that. I would say my readers are those who like traditional suspense and mystery novels but are tired of all the explicit language and sex scenes that aren’t necessary to a good story.

As mysteries and suspense, there is, of course, some violence in the stories. However; I don’t promote or glorify violence. I make sure to show characters experiencing the natural consequences of bad choices and bad actions.

Then what makes your stories Christian Fiction?

My stories always have an element of faith in them. How that plays out depends on the individual plots of each specific story. My main characters are always on a spiritual journey, though some may be further along than others.

My stories shows characters in crisis. I use the crisis to illustrate how real Christians react to real problems in their life. We all react in different ways when bad things happen and the same is true in my stories. I show characters having doubt but also resolving that doubt and becoming stronger in their faith as a result of the crisis.
One more word about Christian Fiction, it has changed dramatically over the past ten years. Other than erotica, readers can find their favorite genre as Christian Fiction as well as mainstream fiction. There are Christian Fiction books out there for every book lover—historical; romance; regency; science fiction; even horror novels.

If REDEMPTION becomes a movie who would you like to see play your main characters?

I’d love to have the Oslin twins play Jamie and Patti. As for Enrique—a dark, handsome actor with a bit of a Hispanic accent. Mmm, who could that be?

What are you working on now?

In July, I had a new mystery novella series released–DEADLY COMMUNICATIONS. It features a crime-fighting speech pathologist. Having been a speech pathologist for almost 35 years, this story was so much fun for me to write.

The second in the series—NOWHERE TO BELONG—will be released sometime next year and I still have some work to do on the third in the series. Along with that I have a few other projects I’m working on. Busy, busy, busy!

Author Interview: 10 Questions With Jodi Desautels

Send to Kindle

Our Interview today is with Jodi Desautels. Thank you Jodi for being here today and for agreeing to do this interview.

Jodi Desautels

Question: What do you think prepared you or qualifies you to write in your chosen genre?

Answer: I write children’s books, so I feel that my time raising a child and my time as a former elementary school teacher has really helped me pin-pinpoint what children want and need at a young age. After spending a great amount of time reading children’s books to children, now I get to do the actual creating!

Question: Tell us a little about your real (Non-writing) life, family, job, church life. Does it give you inspiration for your writing? Does it get in the way of your writing, or are there times when you get help, from people or circumstances?

Answer: Currently, I am a caregiver for my mother-in-law who has severe Alzheimer’s disease. So, I am pretty much at home all the time and this gives me time to write, illustrate, and promote my books and websites. It is difficult to be home so much and not socializing as much as I would like. However, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I admire my husband for wanting to care for his mom at home. I want to do what I can to help. And, my fb friends help so much with my socialization. I am very thankful!

Question: Tell us about things you enjoy and what you do for fun or personal satisfaction?

Answer: I am a good ole country gal! I enjoy being in the country and being among the wildlife. It often fills me with awe and joy. If I am not writing and creating, often you will find me doing chores around the yard on my tractor. Or, when my husband and I get some “alone time,” you might find us riding motorcycles or in kayaks. If you find us around the house, you could find us working on a project or playing some sort of game together. We enjoy cards and backgammon.

Question: Tell us about working with any people who help you create your books. Do you use Beta readers? Hire an editor or proofreader? How do you get your covers?

Answer: I have a growing group of lovely supporters. They do quite a bit for me. I don’t pay for proofreading or editing, etc. I do all of my own work now. I write, illustrate, and format as well as promote. However, before I publish, I have a few friends read and proof the book for me. I can never have too many eyes on a book.

Question: Since you have several books out, tell us what you think works for promotion. What are your thoughts on ebooks versus print books and different ways to let people know about you and your books?

Answer: I am relatively new to the author world. I am still feeling my way through what works and what doesn’t as far as promotion. And, since I am not a rich author yet, I guess I still have quite a bit more to learn. 😉

Books by Jodi Desautels

Question: Have you done anything writing-related, but besides your books, that seemed to get a lot of positive response? Something that encouraged you?

Answer: I have written devotionals/reflections in the past for my church bulletin based on the readings of the day. Those seemed to get positive feedback. I enjoyed doing them as well. It got me really thinking about God’s word.

Question: Tell us about your newest book. Make us want to read it.

Answer: Clarinda Cloud is my star character. The “newest” book I have is a children’s activity book practicing basic skills and focusing on feelings. The “Clarinda Cloud Activity Book” features Clarinda Cloud. Many pages ask children to draw and color what makes them feel a certain way and what their face looks like when they feel that way. Yet, there are other activities such as counting, mazes, finding differences, etc. It is a spin off from the story, “Clarinda Cloud.” However, both books can stand alone. Clarinda Cloud promotes the identifying and sharing of feelings. Both books are wonderful for young children, ages 2-5 or 6.

Clarinda Cloud Activity Book

Question: What is the message of your writing? (For example, is your purpose to encourage old-fashioned values, encourage romance, or do you have different purposes in different books?)

Answer: For both of the Clarinda Cloud books, the overall message is the importance of identifying and sharing feelings. This helps a great deal in preventing an array of violence and negative social issues. “Johnny’s Adventure Makes Reading Fun” provides a strategy for parents and grandparents to make reading fun. I am a big believer that learning can be fun. The book is also an adventure. (Who doesn’t like an adventure?)

Question: Tell us one place you visited or person you met, that made a big impression on you, and why.

Answer: This may sound corny, but…I am going to say, my husband. My life has changed so much from being with him. I have never felt the love, encouragement, support, and confidence as I do with him. It makes a world of difference. Also, his joyful and humorous way of looking at life helps me immensely. I enjoy being with him and the things I am finding out about myself as a result of being with him.

Question: How many books do you have out?

Answer: I have three books out: “Clarinda Cloud,” “Clarinda Cloud Activity Book,” and “Johnny’s Adventure Makes Reading Fun.” They are all fun, relatable, and educational in some way.

Clarinda Cloud is an adorable little story with charming illustrations. Written and illustrated by Jodi DeSautels, this picture book is a good choice for small children, yet kids of any age will have a fun time reading it as well and relating to Clarinda. Her endearing smile is sure to make you and your young one smile too. If your child is feeling sad or bored or angry, this books assures them Clarinda feels those same emotions, and that’s all right. A great teaching tool on how to handle everything from shyness to anger, Jodi uses Clarinda and her changing cloud colors to point out that feelings and emotions are to be shared, no matter what they are, in order to bring healing and to feel better.

Written with love and care that is felt throughout the story, this exceptional book for youngsters contains a powerful message and is illustrated with colorful images. The words are simple and the pictures are easy to understand and interpret. Clarinda Cloud has a friendly face, even though sometimes she’s angry or sad, and she changes in both expression and color throughout the book as a reflection of what she’s feeling at the moment. Whether she is curious or confused, excited or sorry, she is the perfect example of how sharing our feelings is a positive thing to do. Use this book to show your child how to do that too. You won’t be disappointed.

I have loved reading forever and so did my child so the concept that some kids don’t like to read is hard to understand. I was impressed with Jodi’s unique idea for creating an interest in reading. She also addressed the fact that many kids get frustrated when it is hard and just give up. Her little “adventure” gave the initiative to work at it. I hope more parents try this!

Johnny’s Adventure Makes Reading Fun:

KDP Select Versus EReader News Today by Mary C. Findley

Send to Kindle

images (2)

Sophronia Belle Lyon

This is a very informal and unprofessional comparison of Amazon’s KDP Select and the bargain book placement on Ereader News Today.

I published an ebook In October of 2012 called A Dodge, a Twist, and a Tobacconist. My first problem was how to categorize it. It is fiction, and is a decidedly Christian book. It also features characters from classic authors like Dickens, Alcott, Kipling, and others. So I call it a Literary Tribute, but it also falls into a category that is unusual for Christian books. That category is Steampunk. At the time, Amazon didn’t have a Steampunk category, so I put it down as sci-fi and Christian adventure, basically. I also enrolled it in Amazon’s KDP Select program.

That means I got 5 days to promote it free, plus I also produced an illustrated version of the same book and offered that free as well. So I had 10 free days between the two books during about 105 days (I put the illustrated version out about 2 weeks after the plain version.)

On the free days, I got a total of about 1500 downloads of the book. I also now have 17 reviews. I have been told the main reason for doing free days is to get reviews but most have come quite a long time after the books were free. I know that people load free books onto their Kindles and forget about them. I do that too. But I still was a bit disappointed in the results for having the books in the KDP select program. Blame it on the genre or whatever circumstances, but I elected not to continue in Select and submitted them to Smashwords for distribution as soon as the 90 day periods were up.

Since that experiment I have put the plain version on sale for 99 cents a couple of times, and it has sold an average of 4-5 a month. Since it is in a fairly niche category (Steampunk is now an option, and it was still under Christian Adventure, it would show up in the top 100 for its category about every other month. I thought that was pretty good, considering a lot of the time, when I tell people, “I am writing a Steampunk series,” they say, “What’s Steampunk?”

I had been hearing for some time that people were getting their books placed on Ereader News Today, or ENT. That’s a site that has a very large following of people looking for free or 99 cent books. They invite authors to submit books for possible listing. As soon as I had 10 reviews averaging 4-5 stars (that’s a requirement) I started submitting the book to the site requesting to be listed.

Author friends all around me seemed to be getting theirs listed without too much delay, and they got some great results. But three email requests and about 8 months later, I was still waiting. I had been submitting the book as SciFi, and that seemed not to be working, so I tried Christian Fiction, and that finally worked. So I had my day on the site February 11 of this year.

Just before the book went up on the site, I changed a category to try to capitalize on the book’s inspirational character. But imagine my surprise when it started to show up in the top 100 of the category Metaphysics and Visionary. Wow. Where did that come from? Here’s an image of stats fairly late in the day. I missed the one where it pushed into the top 4500 in the store.

dodge 1 1 and 4 in scifi categories

It got up to #1 in two Science Fiction rankings, and #3 in that Metaphysical category. Today, two days later, it’s still on three top 100 rankings, though it’s slipping a bit, but I’m still pleased.

Some of my author friends said when their book was on the site they got 300 or more sales, and continued in the hundreds afterward for at least a few days. Now it’s time for a reality check.

My sales for the month of February for that book total, if Amazon is up to date, 54. So it was a failure, you ask? I don’t think so. As I said, it’s a very niche genre. I’m waiting to see if there is review fallout over those odd category rankings. At one point it was about #7 in the top 100 of a nonfiction inspirational category. Oops. It’s not nonfiction. From selling at most 5 a month, I have gone to selling over 50 a month. 10 times the sales. So it seems to me that that’s at least respectable. And it’s continuing to sell, when it hadn’t been at all for the last couple of months.

Visibility on the ENT site and high rankings on Amazon seem to have done it some good. This is an image from this afternoon, two days and a bit later.

dodge 2 13 2014 rankings

If your book is priced at 99 cents, Ereader News will bill you 25% of copies sold on the day it’s featured. Amazon charges you more than that just to sell it on their site anytime. When your book is free under the KDP program, you have to go around to the hundred or so sites that promote free books and notify them yourself. All Ereader News today asks is that you share and tweet their site link for your book, and that you like, and ask others to like, the post on their facebook page. It’s certainly a lot less work, and you are still getting some money for the book, rather than the nothing you get on KDP Select free days.

So how did I feel about getting to number 1 in Steampunk, and about 4500 in the whole Kindle store with a book that is about as far from Contemporary Romance (the easiest genre to get people to buy) as you can get? Giddy. Excited. Happy.

But more importantly, I hope we extended our reach. That’s what we really hope to do with all our books. More than fifty people now own one of our books who didn’t before. We even sold a couple of print copies, and we almost never sell any of those.

In the back of that book are small samples of all our books, and a link to our blog. They can read more about us, and understand our purpose, which is “speaking the truth in love.”

We want to reach more people with the message of the authority of God’s Word, and our “tough but you need it” perspectives on education, current events, and biblical teaching. We want them to know that we have books for almost everybody’s taste — historical fiction, sci-fi, homeschool curriculum, issues nonfiction, illustrated. There’s a bit of romance, a bit of mystery, and books for all ages.

I don’t feel like I did the work in this endeavor. I wrote the book, but that was a year and a half ago. I didn’t exhaust myself submitting to a ton of sites (KDP), spend a ton of money (most paid advertising), or obsessively check my sales and stats all day. (Well, maybe I did do those last two.) I was happy when I shared the stats and people said they were going to check out the book.

I hope people like my book and I get good reviews.

Most of all, I hope this lets us have a little bigger opportunity to reach people with a message I think is very needed. God loves the unlovely. God can save anybody. Evil doesn’t have to overcome good. People can come from all kinds of backgrounds. Orphans on the streets, servants, princes, cowgirls, merchants, jungle trackers — those are the kinds of people who came together in A Dodge, a Twist, and a Tobacconist to form the Alexander Legacy Company. And God started a great work through them to try to free slaves and overcome slavers. Here’s hoping this is also just the beginning of Findley Family Video’s work to bring a message that God frees people from sin, all kinds of people, and that we don’t have to lose the fight for our country, for our freedom, and for men’s souls.

The Glory of God All Around Us

When walking in a park or forest, along the beach or mountain path, do you feel the proximity of the Divine around you? Can you sense the heavens and earth giving you glimpses of spiritual realities? In her trilogy entitled Divine Reflections, Eva Peck explores how everyday phenomena, such as the times of a day, month and year, life progression and habits of plants and animals, as well as other natural phenomena mirror spiritual realities revealed in the Bible. She is encouraging readers to take a deeper look at life’s mysteries surrounding us and to then ponder the insights they receive.

You can buy any or all of the Divine Reflections trilogy volumes, as well Eva’s other Christian spirituality books, including a comprehensive book of Bible teachings entitled Pathway to Life Through the Holy Scriptures at

Scrooge Falls in Love by Susette Williams

Tate Stephens, the high school principal, begrudgingly agrees to play Scrooge in the school Christmas play. Tate is irritated that Charity Fletcher, his nephew’s teacher and director of the play, chose his handicapped nephew for the part of Tiny Tim. Didn’t she find it cruel to typecast his nephew that way? Can the school play be a success, or will Tate become the Scrooge who wouldn’t change and spoils Christmas?

Charity Fletcher is inspired by how precocious, outgoing and sweet Matthias Reeves is in spite of his bone disease. His over-protective uncle, Tate, on the other hand, can be quite infuriating. She reluctantly gives Tate a role in the school play so that he can make sure that Matthias is safe. Charity hopes that Uncle Tate will make a similar transformation as Scrooge in their rendition of the play. If Matthias is lucky, perhaps his teacher and uncle can find true love with a happily ever after ending.
