Ps. 119:49-50 Remember your promise to me, for it is my only hope. Your promise revives me, it comforts me in all my troubles.
It is okay to ask the Lord to remember His promises to you. When you are reminded of a promise of God, tell the Lord what He said He would do for you, trust Him to keep His word, and then act like you believe it. It’s one thing to know God’s promises, it’s a totally different thing to stand on them. I suspect that most of us don’t want to believe that God will do what He has promised; for if were to believe it, it would move us out of our comfort zones. We like to believe in God in a certain way. We don’t want Him to act in less than a predictable way. We get uneasy when God acts outside the box of our experiences or expectations.
When we consider God’s promises, we need to be discerning. Not every promise of God in the Scriptures are for us to claim and stand on. There are some things that God promised to the nation of Israel that do not apply to us. Owning every promise of God as our own can lead us into wrong doctrine and very frustrated Christian living. When God does not give us what He promised to the Israelites, doubt and confusion can set in. God always keeps His word to us. We just need to make sure that what we are asking God to do is what He has promised to do for us.
God never makes a promise to us that goes contrary to the Word. If it is not in the Word or backed up by the Word, then what we claim to be from God cannot be from God. He never makes a promise that is inconsistent with who He is. He never promises us anything that is not permitted within the boundaries of His holiness.
The promises of God fill a great need in our lives. When we stand on the promises we have renewed strength for living. There is no situation in life that is not helped by God’s promises if were to but believe and trust. God’s promises give us hope, they revive our souls, and they comfort us in our times of trouble.
