Joe the Dreamer: The Castle and the Catapult

Enter an area where people are missing and radicals want to obliterate Christianity from the earth. After Joe Baker’s parents mysteriously disappear, he finds himself with a vicious man after him. Joe and an unusual gang team up to find his mom and dad. The gang is committed to preventing and solving crimes with ordinary harmless things such as noise, water, and a pet skunk instead of blades and bullets. Joe reads the Bible hoping to discover whether God will answer prayer and bring his parents home. In his dreams, Joe slips into the skin of Bible characters and what happened to them, happens to him—the peril and the victories. Yet, crying out in his sleep causes him to end up in a mental hospital’s juvenile unit. Will he escape or will he be harmed? Will he find his parents? Does God answer prayer?
EXCERPT FROM JOE THE DREAMER, CHAPTER 43
Joe stared through the binoculars, then recognized the guard. He was the person who glared at him through the window the night of the break-in. But the male robot might be even more dangerous.
“Let’s take out the boy robot.” Joe dropped a pumpkin in the jacket and aimed. Thumbs already had climbed up the small ladder and loaded the catapult Pete’s dad helped build.
“Fire!” Joe whispered, hoping his aim was on target. He and Thumbs fired at the same instant and orange ammunition flew.
Both the robot and the guard moved, however. The ammo exploded on the guard’s big stomach, and he hit the ground.
Joe’s pumpkin shot up, then rolled away hitting nothing. He needed to aim better.
Joe watched down in the valley below as he reloaded, and then he froze. Was that Uncle Faulkner’s SUV pulling in beside the castle? Yes. Looked like Uncle Faulkner and a lady and a man got out.
“Faulkner is going to mess all this up! Why would he come?”
“He doesn’t know you’re up here. Let’s get the big robot!”
The robots slowly drew nearer each other.
“Kill!” the guard shouted and pointed, trying to get up as he flicked pumpkin goo away.
Joe and Thumbs loaded. Joe whispered, “Fire!”
Orange balls hurled. One whirled past the robots, leaving them unharmed. The other hit the guard on the backside and plunged him face first into the dirt.
“Who shall I kill? These intruders? Or those?” the robot guard pointed to Faulkner’s vehicle.
“Fire!” yelped Thumbs as soon as they reloaded. As Joe aimed for the robot, he wished he’d had time to practice. He prayed under his breath, but his pumpkin cannonball hurled toward the big guard, still struggling to get to his feet. This time, the pumpkin splatted on the huge man’s foot. He bellowed.
“Can’t seem to hit that robot,” Thumbs grumbled softly as he prepared to fire again.
“Kill!” the big fat guard shouted at the robot. The jack-o’-lantern fodder knocked him down again as soon as he stood.
The robots kept clanking toward each other.
“I’ll kill these men myself!” the guard yelled as he struggled to his feet again. He took a handgun from under his jacket and aimed at Centipede. “I don’t know who’s throwing the pumpkins, but I have some real bullets.”
Centipede opened his oversized shirt, and a metal mirror flashed the sun into Gorilla’s eyes. But Gorilla fired anyway.
Centipede fell backward to the ground.
