CrossMatt. 6:32b-33 “Your heavenly Father knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.”

It is a very important word in our vocabulary. It speaks of conditions. The result depends on the performance. It is noteworthy how many times God uses the word in connection with His promises.

Here the Lord promises to take care of us every day of our lives, IF we live for Him and make His Kingdom our primary concern. The Lord’s promise is not a blanket statement for all who profess Him as Savior of life. We must live for Him and make His Kingdom our main focus in life.

We cannot life for Him and have other agendas in our lives. The Lord must be our main focus. He will not share our loyalties. Living for Him means that we take a back seat to Him. We live to honor Him. We desire that He gets the glory and not ourselves. We commit ourselves to not only being like Him, but to being ambassadors for Him in the world.

Making the Kingdom of God our primary concern means that we are one with the Lord in His agenda. We are seeking out the lost that they may be saved. We are determined to do all we can do to make a difference for Christ in the world. We are so tied to God’s agenda that it is all we live for. We live for what is before us and not what is around us.

The Lord’s promise is to supply every need of our lives when our living is right. There is nothing lacking in His provision. He lovingly provides what we need and lovingly withholds from us what we want when it conflicts with what is good for us.

Is the Kingdom of God your primary concern in life?

About the Author:

Jim Hughes

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Weekly Devotional: Gems From Pastor Jim 3/1/2021

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossHabakkuk 1:13 You are perfectly just in this. But will you, who cannot allow sin in any form, stand idly by while they swallow us up? Should you be silent while the wicked destroy people who are more righteous than they?

The Babylonians were sent to punish the Israelites for their sins. God had had enough. His people had worn out His patience. They went through the motions of allegiance to God but their hearts were far from Him. They claimed to be His, but did not live like it. They expected the Lord’s favor upon them, but did not humble themselves before Him or obey Him.

God cannot allow sin in any form. We must understand this profound and all important truth. There is no sin in the presence of God. Ever. Sin must be dealt with before one approaches God or he will be denied access to God. God is holy and hates all sin. In order to approach God, we must be made righteous in Christ. As much as we may not like it, we must confess our sins before Christ and seek His forgiveness. There is no other way to draw near to God.

We don’t stress this truth much anymore, but I believe it is a critical truth. We must preach and teach it until we believe it. God is sin intolerant. He will not overlook sin in any form. He will not let sin anywhere near Him. No one will make it to heaven with a sin problem hanging over their soul. Repentance is for Christians too! In fact, I believe that it is even more important for the believer than the non-believer because we are held accountable for what we know. The sinner’s prayer for forgiveness is just the beginning of a lifetime of forgiveness. We all sin and come short of the glory of God.

I believe it is dangerous for us to assume that once we are saved we are no longer in need of repentance. How can sin go away without it? Does the righteousness of Christ guarantee our acceptance by God regardless of our sins? All I know is that the Word calls us into a confession of our sins. God commands holiness in the heart of His children and dealing with sin is the only way it is going to happen.

CrossMicah 6:8 No, O people, the LORD has already told you what is good, and this is what he requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

The Lord is not mysterious about how to live a life pleasing to Him. He makes it very clear that the righteous shun evil and live right before Him. He vividly details what living right before Him means in practical living. Being good before God entails doing what is right, loving mercy, and walking humbly before God.

Doing what is right is simply living a godly life. It is simply taking the Word of God and striving to live it. It is turning one’s back on what is evil and taking on the righteousness of Christ. Godly living is soul building. It is all that helps us be like God in character. Doing what is right is what pleases God.

Loving mercy is treating people better than they deserve to be treated. It is letting God take care of the judgment of their souls. It is striving to focus on the good in people instead of the bad. It is giving people opportunity to change their ways when they mess up. It is turning the other cheek when they wrong us instead of seeking vengeance.

Walking humbly before God means that we acknowledge that God is sovereign over us. It is giving the Lord the credit due Him for all He does in and through us. It is not exalting ourselves. It is always seeking to honor and glorify God. It is understanding that we owe the Lord our very lives, now and forever.

It is good for us to do what God requires of us. It is the only assurance that we have we will make it to heaven. Doing these things without a relationship with Christ will make us good in the eyes of man, but it will not make us qualified for heaven. Jesus alone is the way, truth and life. It is only a living relationship with Christ that will make us good before God.

Are you doing what God requires of you?

crossJer. 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

You may not know what the future holds for you, but the Lord does. He knows all that lies ahead of you, both the good and the bad. He knows your ups and downs. There is nothing that you will face in life that He doesn’t already know about and He is preparing you today for what lies ahead.

What you need for your future the Lord knows and lovingly is providing you with it today. You may not see it or understand it, but be assured that the Lord is taking care of you. He lovingly is equipping you for your good and He will be glorified because of it. Do not take lightly what the Lord is doing in your life today, because you need it for all of your tomorrows.

Learn well what the Lord is showing you about Him and life. Search the Scriptures daily so you will learn all that you need for today and your future. Observe what is happening in your life so that you can learn important spiritual lessons from it. Learn from others who have walked the path you are on so that you can handle what lies ahead of you.

The plans the Lord has in store for you are all good. He does not let you go through anything in life that is not good for you. Trust in God’s goodness and do not let Satan cause you to doubt it. Nothing that happens in the life of the godly is bad if we but have eyes to see the goodness of God. Things may be difficult for us to go through, but we can go through them victoriously for Christ gives us the means and strength to do it.

Keep your eyes focused on the truth of God’s love and goodness and your future will be bright, full of hope and the peace of God will steady you each step you take. The Lord plans on walking with you each step you take until He gets you home to heaven. Trust God; He will not let you down or disappoint you as you boldly step into your future.

Inspiration Monday: Gems From Pastor Jim

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossProv. 12:18 Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.

A real test of your character is how well you speak of others. Do you tear down or build up? Do you destroy or bring healing? No one likes to hear words of destruction. We like to be spoken well of, to hear words of encouragement. Wise is the person who knows how to bring words of healing to the soul. One of the greatest gifts a person can have is the gift of encouragement. It is something everyone can do. It may take some work to develop it, but with effort it can be done.

If you are not an encourager, can you really say that you love God and others? Be honest. God always strives to lift up His children. He wants them to reach their potential in Him. Notice how many times He uses words and phrases to let us know that we are more than we think we are in Him. He calls us overcomers, a royal priesthood, His children, mighty conquerors, servants of God, etc. Over and over again God tells us how special we are to Him. He sees us for not only who we are, but for whom we can become in Him. Shouldn’t we be the same way towards one another?

Want to make a difference in the world? Be an encourager. Learn how to see the good in people and spur them on to greater goodness. Don’t take the easy and low road and add poison to someone’s soul. Lift them up and bring words of healing to them. Just one word of encouragement in time of need could forever change the course of someone’s life.

Sure people mess up and make a mess of their lives. The world is full of people who make fools of themselves by making bad choices in their lives. There are a multitude of people who make life miserable for those striving to live right before God. Instead of making matters worse by tearing them down, we should love them enough to try to bring healing to their souls by loving them through Christ. And if they are unresponsive to our love, it is best to remain silent and not tear them down with our cutting remarks. Pray for them and let the Lord deal with them.
