Verse of the Day and Devotional 4/29/2021

Send to Kindle

Verse of the Day

April 29th, 2021

Scripture

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23 ESV

Devotion

While wading through mountainous piles of laundry, I inspected a pair of blue jeans that had definitely seen better days. They were entirely threadbare, the knees hung open with gaping holes. The hems were ragged from dragging the ground. As I decided to throw them away, I remembered hearing a story from a missionary who had returned from an impoverished nation in Southeast Asia.

He said that the children of Bangladesh are enamored with Americans. They believe that all Americans are worthy of cinematic grandeur; that everyone here lives a fantasy life. In Bangladesh, the average monthly wage will hardly buy a fast-food lunch in the United States, so anything “made in America” is exceedingly valuable. He said that a pair of old, worn blue jeans could sell for an entire year’s income. Why? Because that’s how much someone was willing pay for them.

I saw a notice in Anytime Fitness reading “Lost Ring: $1,000 Reward.” The notice explained that the ring had been left in the ladies’ locker room, and that the stone wasn’t genuine. It was the owner’s grandmother’s engagement ring. Most likely, a comparable ring would only retail for tiny fraction of the reward money, so why was such a figure offered? Because of sentimental reasons. That’s how much the owner was willing to pay for its return.

Especially after a significant failure or rejection, we tend to feel pretty worthless. Sometimes following a sub-par performance at the office, a lost argument with a neighbor, or a nasty fight with an angry spouse, the enemy capitalizes on our fragile emotions and attempts to destroy our self-esteem. When the world says that we’re meaningless or expendable, consider for a moment what the King of glory thinks about us! He values us so much that He became human, endured excruciating torture and sacrificed His very life for our salvation. The value of anything is determined exactly by how much someone is willing to pay!

John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus Christ paid everything He had. According to our Heavenly Father, we’re priceless! Rejoice, and know that you are valued beyond comprehension.

Somethings Not Right

“Something’s Not Right” is the book I never thought I would write. It is our family’s story of our journey through the confusing, confounding maze that is dyslexia. Deeply personal, “Something’s Not Right” walks the reader through each step we took to find solutions for my son’s dyslexia.

If you are a parent with a child who either has dyslexia or a child who is struggling to read or to succeed in school, then this is the book for you. It will give you practical solutions to the vexing problems your child faces every day. It will help you understand the underlying issues, and it will help you navigate your way to finding actual help in a sea of questions that oftentimes make as little sense to you as they do for your child.

Don’t struggle anymore! Dyslexia is not the permanent death of success it seems to be. It’s time to break free and help your child become the amazing kid God made them to be. There are answers, and this book is the place to start!

Weekly Devotional: Gems from Pastor Jim 4/26/2021

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossMal. 3:8-10 “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!” But you ask, “What do you mean? When did we cheat you?” “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you!”

“Should people cheat God?” Let us pause and reflect on this question. How might we cheat God? Malachi addresses the issue of tithes and offerings. God, through Malachi, challenged His people to be faithful givers to Him. He equated their disobedience in giving to their difficulties in life. He promised to bless His children if they brought to Him their tithes and offerings. There are other ways that we cheat God as well.

When we fail to acknowledge God before man, we cheat Him. When we fail to be a witness for the Lord we are depriving others of the opportunity to perhaps come to Him. We are cheating the Lord of the opportunity to speak to a person’s needs.

When we fail to give thanks and praise the Lord, we are cheating Him of the glory He so richly deserves. Others need to hear what God has done and our gratitude to Him for doing it.

When we fail to serve the Lord, we are cheating Him. God gives us gifts and talents to use to reach others with the Gospel message. He graciously blesses us to use us and when we don’t let Him use us, we are cheating Him of the glory He deserves.

When we fail to spend time alone with Him, we are cheating Him of our fellowship. The Lord longs for us to spend time alone with Him in His Word. It is there that He speaks most often to us. It is there that we learn how to live holy lives that please Him. The Lord longs for us to spend time alone waiting before Him. Prayer is a vital part of our fellowship with God and when we don’t pray, we are cheating Him of our fellowship.

Can God accuse us of cheating Him? Ask Him in what ways you have cheated Him. Wait quietly for Him to answer. Listen to what He is telling you and start now doing something about it. Perhaps you are cheating God in other ways. Let Him guide you. God wants to bless you, but when you cheat Him, you are keeping Him from doing it. Let Him have His way with you.

The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chaper on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Prayer Request Board 4/24/2021

Send to Kindle

by Russell Sherrard

I am forming an additional feature for Christian Nonfiction/Fiction Books … A Prayer Request Board. I looked at multiple groups on Facebook that billed themselves as prayer request groups and the biggest thing I saw was that the group was overwhelmed with nothing but prayer requests, sometimes as many as thousands and both you and I know some of them and to a degree a lot of them will fall through the cracks. I have set up a special email address, prayer_requests@sherrardsebookresellers.com. Please send your prayer request to this email address. Any prayer request that is posted to the group will be deleted. I don’t want the group to be overwhelmed with prayer requests and overrun the stated purpose of the group to discuss, promote and share your Clean Christian Nonfiction/Fiction Books and eBooks. Each week I will post in this announcement the prayer requests received in the last week. This way all group members can see all of the prayer requests and pray over one or more. These requests will remain in this space for one week at which time another group of prayer requests will be posted. So, Starting now, please send your prayer requests to prayer_requests@sherrardsebookresellers.com and starting next Saturday I will post the prayer requests from the previous week. In addition, This announcement will form a blog post that will be posted on Saturdays so this blog post will get to SherrardseBookResellers Newsletter which has mostly different eyes than this group has.

Verse of the Day and Devotional 4/22/2021

Send to Kindle

April 22nd, 2021

Scripture

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

Devotion

A new year feels like a fresh start. A time when we make resolutions, plans, or bucket lists. We want to do better, try harder, achieve more than the previous year. Personally, I ask God for a phrase and Scripture verse to build on for personal and spiritual growth. I am always amazed on how God achieves the goal. It generally is not how I anticipated the year’s journey would be. Thank God that He who began a good work will bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6).

Our verse of the day reminds us if we are in Christ, we are a new creation. New in every way eternally! It is not just a temporary resolution or commitment; we are given a whole new way of thinking, living, and loving. We devote our life to God because we have been born again (John 3). We were spiritually dead, but now we are alive! Paul goes on to clarify how this happens: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (v. 21).

It is through God giving us a new nature that He begins to develop His character within us. He develops the fruits of the Spirit in us (Galatians 5:22-23). Many of you have walked with Christ for several years like I have. Sometimes I become frustrated that I am not further along in the process. I look at the results instead of looking at the One who began the good work and who promises to complete it.

Jesus warns the Church of Ephesus in Revelation 2, you have abandoned the love you had at first. May we be resolute to pursue the love we had at first. When God has our heart, the rest will follow. He will strengthen us and empower us to complete His mission. “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation… Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God,” (2 Corinthians 5:18, 20).

This year is a fresh opportunity to drink in deeply the love of God and exalt His Son. You are the righteousness of God in Christ and you have been given the ministry of reconciliation to God.

Stand firm in His Word and be diligent in prayer. His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136).
