Scripture

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. – Isaiah 40:8 ESV

Devotion

What is the nature of the Bible and how should we relate to it? Should we take its words seriously? Can we rely on them? Or are they just interesting artifacts from ancient times that say something about those times, but say nothing to us?

We live in a world of change. Nothing stays the same. The only constant seems to be that there is nothing constant. Things come and things go. Isaiah spoke, but Isaiah was a mere man. Men say all sorts of things. Why take Isaiah’s word more seriously than any other man’s?

Indeed, Isaiah seems to have undermined his own message. He likened people to grass and said, “All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it” (Isaiah 40:6-7). Does this not apply to Isaiah himself? Are not his words the mere words of a withering blade of grass? People come and people go, and their words come to naught. Why should anything be different in his case?

Isaiah, however, does not draw this conclusion. Although he was a withering blade of grass and a fading flower of the field like everyone else, he proclaimed his message not as his own but as the fixed and firm Word of God Himself. Isaiah knew he would fade away, but he also knew that his words would stand forever because they came from a place beyond his transient existence.

In this ever-changing world we live in, people desperately search for words that will stand fixed and firm. They frantically search for words that speak unchanging truth about our world. Christians believe that Isaiah’s words, along with all the words of the Bible, broke into this temporal world of ours from heaven above and gave us the eternal words we need. These words have the same status as Jesus’ words, of which He said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

And we know that this is the case by the faith that rises within us when we hear them, for “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Weekly Devotional: Gems from Pastor Jim 9/27/2021

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossMatt. 7:13-14 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow and only a few ever find it.”

There is only one way to enter into God’s Kingdom and that is through Christ. God has made no other provision for our salvation. He is the doorway and He will not let any enter who does not embrace Him as their Savior and Lord.

Most people do not embrace this truth. They try to find another way into heaven. They believe Satan’s lies that there has to be another way. They refuse to see themselves in need of Christ. Most people want nothing to do with God’s way. They convince themselves that their own way is good enough. Most people will remain on the outside looking in and will never know what heaven is like on the inside.

Only a few people will enter into heaven. Only a few will humble themselves before Christ, confess their sins, and seek His forgiveness. Only a few will strive to live life God’s way. God’s way is the pathway of holiness. It is a path where one is constantly changing, being conformed into the likeness of Christ. Only a few will persevere to the end and enter into heaven.

Contrary to the teaching of many, the way to heaven is not easy. It is not easy to stand strong for truth in a world that hates the truth. It is not easy to stand alone on righteousness when those around you are encouraging you not to. It is not easy to be looked down on and sometimes harmed because you dare not compromise on godly living. It is not easy to proclaim the Word of God to a people who do not want to hear it and will make life miserable for you if you do. It is not easy, but it’s the only way to heaven.

Be different than most. Put your faith in Christ alone and let Him be your righteousness and holiness before God. Put your faith in Christ and let Him make you fit for heaven. Be among the few who will enter through heaven’s door. You will be eternally grateful you did.

Spending his formative years in Ft. Wayne, IN, Jim followed the love of his life to southeast Iowa where they married and have spent the majority of their lives. Jim has pastored several churches throughout his life and has worked many years in local factories to help support his family. The father of two married adult children and one son still at home, Jim is a first-time author.

C Through Marriage came into being through many years of pastoral and life experiences. The book first took on a life of its own over 20 years ago when I sought to address the much publicized moral failures of prominent leaders in the church. In the chapter on Chasity, I include the guideliness that I developed then to protect one’s self from such failures.

I am a firm believer in order to make sense out of life you have to use much common sense. We need to get back to the basics of what has worked for many, many generations. If is isn’t broke, why try to fix it? I strive to return to the basics of what really works in all my writings.

Verse of the Day

September 23, 2021

Scripture

He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” – John 21:16 ESV

Devotion

Perhaps in high school you experienced the feeling of flirting with someone from across the room. The butterflies that rush through your body when your eyes catch the other person staring at you are almost visible. Maybe you winked or shyly smiled. Even though the new emotions flooding your senses feel very real and very close, the extent of your relationship with that person is distant! Flirtation has produced liking, but love is far from the equation.

Many people spend their life flirting with God from across the room without ever truly getting close and falling in love with Him. Jesus wants us to be so in love that we are married to Him. He wants us to love Him more than the stuff He has given us.

As He asked Peter and He asks us, “Do you love Me more than these?” Do you love Him more than your passions, career, gadgets, and possessions? Have you ever had a relapse when you walked away from God to your former lifestyle? In that moment, did you respond like the prodigal son and come back to your first love? The question remains, do you love God more?

Along the same line, do you love Him more than the things He does for you?

We love seeing God do big miracles, and we love knowing we are saved, but do we love God more than the things He does? Today examine your relationship with God and determine if you are truly in love with Him or if you’re merely flirting with Him from across the room. Can I encourage the flirters to get the courage to take your relationship to the next level? The answer can be a big YES! He wants to be with you.

Weekly Devotional: Gems from Pastor Jim 9/20/2021

Send to Kindle

by Jim Hughes

CrossMatt. 7:3-5 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye when you can’t see past the log in your own?’ Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye, then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”

We don’t think much about our own issues when we criticize or judge others. It’s not too hard to convince ourselves that we don’t have any issues, or if we do, that they don’t really matter. We are easily led into the trap of seeing ourselves in a positive light and others in a negative one.

Jesus instructs us to look inward before we look outward. An honest look at ourselves through the lens of God’s Word quickly reminds us of just how far short we fall from God’s standards. None of us can honestly say we don’t have issues, that there is no sin in us.

Jesus instructs us to take our issues to God before we attempt to address the issues others have. Only the pure in heart have the right to confront others with sin. Think about this a moment. I wonder how many professing Christians actually live this out. It is easy to pull out our Bibles and point out the sins of others. It’s another thing to pull out our Bibles and let God point out our own sins. I wonder how we would act differently when confronting others if we were to spend time before the Lord in repentance first. I suspect we would be a lot more compassionate and gracious.

Jesus reminds us that it’s hypocrisy for us to intervene in someone’s life without first dealing with our sins before God. Don’t let Satan deceive you in this. All of us are sinners and need to let Christ purify our hearts before we stand in judgment over others.

Verse of the Day

September 16, 2021

Scripture

Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying, “Praise God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.” – Luke 2:13-14 ERV

Devotion

In November 2015, three Muslim terrorists opened fire in the Bataclan Theatre in Paris. That day, 90 people were killed in the attack and more than 200 were wounded. The day after, an unnamed man played John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ on a grand piano outside the Bataclan. A video recording of his performance went viral. Many people were touched by this statement of love and hope amidst fear and anger.

Love? Hope? Based on what? The first line of Lennon’s song says, ‘Imagine there’s no heaven.’ And a little later, he sings, ‘Nothing to die or kill for, and no religion too.’ In John Lennon’s understanding, religion is a source of hatred and violence, like peace will follow once people get rid of religion. A song with a painful undertone that echoes in the hearts of many.

In the night that Jesus Christ was born, a huge army of angels sang about a completely different peace, a peace that comes from the heaven that John Lennon denied. A divine peace so special that it needed that glorious celestial choir to properly laud it.

In Luke 2:11, the angel announces the source of that peace, “Today your Savior was born in David’s town.” Because of our sinful nature, we were at war with God. We displeased Him. Jesus came to save us from sin and death. With His sacrifice, He settled the war between God and us. In Christ, we please God again. According to our verse of the day, peace will be the result. Our world is in desperate need of that peace, and the love and hope it entails. Let the words of the angel be our testimony to the people around us!

Whose song do we join today? May the Lord give you peace at all times and in every way.
