Article marketing is not the sexiest way to sell eBooks online, but I’ve found it to be one of the most effective. There are a number of reasons for this, eg, you give potential readers a preview of who you are as an author; they get to see your writing style; and they get familiar with your product before purchasing.
For these reasons, I advise every self-publisher to incorporate marketing with articles into their eBook marketing strategy. Following are six tips on how to effectively promote your eBook via article marketing.
1. Produce High-Quality Content: One of the reasons article marketing gets such a bad name is that the info dispensed is so general that they don’t help readers learn anything new. Their goal is to just push out some content. Don’t do this.
Take the time to think from the reader’s perspective, and give them some valuable information that they can’t easily find any place else and/or that adds to what they may already know.
2. Do Your Keyword Research: The whole reason to use article marketing as part of your eBook marketing strategy is to drive traffic to your website or blog, right? Well, any type of online marketing these days begins and ends with keyword research.
If you don’t know what this is, Google “how to do keyword research” and learn what it is and how to do it. Otherwise, you’ll be “marketing in the dark;” ie, writing articles for nothing.
3. Don’t Stuff Your Articles with Keywords: This is known as “keyword stuffing” and many article directories won’t accept content that’s written like this.
Also, search engines like Google have taken note of this practice, and will penalize content like this. These days, an accepted keyword density rate is between 1-2 percent. To get this, use this rule, ie: “Don’t repeat your keyword phrase more than once every 100 to 150 words.”
4. Write Themed SEO Content: Piggybacking on the last point, use more than one keyword phrase in your article to round out the copy. This way, you don’t have to worry about repeating one keyword phrase over and over again.
So, for example, if your primary keyword phrase is “eBook marketing,” some other relevant, high-traffic keyword phrases would be: book marketing plan, eBook internet marketing and how to market an eBook.
5. Write Longer Articles: Many article directories have a 400-word minimum. While it’s possible to dispense helpful info in this many words, I advise that you make your articles longer. Mine tend to be in the 500-700 word range (FYI, this one is 754 words, including the title).
This is short enough to be read quickly, yet long enough to provide some real insight into a topic.
Another reason to write longer articles is that search engines tend to favor longer content these days. In the past, many online marketers just threw together 200 or 300 word articles and keyword stuffed them to drive traffic.
When the Google Penguin and Panda updates happened in 2011, one of what I call Google’s “SEO writing guidelines” to come out of this was the preference for longer content.
6. Write and Distribute Regularly: Many self-publishers are surprised to find that writing an eBook is the easy part; eBook marketing is where the real work comes in.
One of the first rules of learning how to market an eBook is to do it consistently. So if you’re going to incorporate article marketing into your book marketing plan, you should write and distribute a new article at least once per week.
I’ve written over 50 eBooks, and I release 3-5 new articles per week. Since 2010, over half my income has come from eBooks I write and self-publish. Marketing aggressively like this helps to keep my eBook sales consistent.
