Granny Clampett kept her tonic brew in the cabinet.out of sight. The little brown jug was no secret; Jed, Jethro and Elly May knew that she was imbibing.

Many try to hide the evidence; they have a drinking problem…

“Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has red eyes?
Those who linger long over wine,
Those who go to]taste mixed wine.
Do not look at wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it goes down smoothly;
In the end it bites like a snake
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things
And your mind will say perverse things.
And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
‘They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When will I awake?
I will seek another drink (Proverbs 23:29-35 NASB).”

People can break the drinking cycle. They seek God!

“Seek the Lord while He may be found;
Call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to the Lord,
And He will have compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:6-7 NASB).”

This work was first published in weekly installments over a twenty-year span in the London Metropolitan Tabernacle’s periodical, The Sword and the Trowel.
Completed sections were released volume by volume, until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. Within a decade more than 120,000 sets had been sold. The Treasury of David is a superb literary achievement. Eric Hayden, pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle a century after Spurgeon’s ministry began there, calls this work “Spurgeon’s magnum opus.” Spurgeon’s wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial.
