Newsom Calls Vote on New Congressional Map.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that California will hold a Nov. 4 special election seeking voter approval of a new congressional map designed to give Democrats five additional U.S. House seats in 2026.

A recent poll found 64% of Californians oppose Newsom’s plan and want to keep the state’s independent redistricting commission, while 36% support returning map-drawing power to lawmakers.

The plan is aimed at countering a Texas GOP proposal to add five Republican seats, which prompted Texas Democrats to flee the state. They have said they will return Friday if certain conditions are met.

List: Most Dominant Industries by State.

New data shows real estate is the largest industry in 26 states, including California, Florida, and most of the East Coast. Manufacturing ranks second, topping GDP in 13 states.

Finance and insurance lead in just four states, including New York and South Dakota, while mining is dominant in three—Wyoming, West Virginia, and North Dakota.

Government tops the economy in D.C. and Oklahoma, and just one state each is led by professional services (Massachusetts), information (Washington), or transportation (Alaska).
