Trump Orders New, ‘Modern’ Census.
President Trump ordered the Commerce Department on Thursday to begin work on a new U.S. census that excludes illegal immigrants.
He says it should reflect modern population data and incorporate insights from the 2024 election. Trump made a similar attempt during his first term, but the Supreme Court blocked it in 2019.
The census, mandated every 10 years, has historically counted all residents regardless of immigration status.
Trump’s directive marks a significant shift that could affect how congressional seats and federal funding are distributed.
FBI Tapped to Track Down Texas Democrats.
Sen. John Cornyn said Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel agreed to help locate Texas Democrats who fled the state to block a redistricting plan that could give Republicans five more congressional seats.
Texas Gov. Abbott has ordered civil arrests and filed suit to remove lawmakers like Rep. Gene Wu, while Cornyn accuses them of potential bribery for accepting travel funds from groups, including Beto O’Rourke’s PAC.
Each Democrat is being fined $500 per day they’re absent. Democrats, many of whom fled to Illinois to avoid voting in Texas, are labeling the federal involvement as overreach.
Daring Mission Rescues 3 from Antarctica.
Three Americans were evacuated from McMurdo Station, a remote U.S. military-supported research base in Antarctica, in a daring 20-hour medical rescue mission led by New Zealand’s Air Force.
One patient required urgent care, and two others needed treatment that the station couldn’t provide. The U.S. requested help from New Zealand.
Faced with 24-hour darkness, sub-zero temperatures, and no backup landing options, a C-130J Hercules military transport aircraft flew round-trip from New Zealand, with a doctor on board.
The aircraft landed on a hand-groomed ice runway using night vision goggles and refueled on the ice without shutting off its engines. All three patients are now receiving care in Christchurch, the nearest major medical hub.
POLITICS.
The White House said Thursday that President Trump is “open” to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin without the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Trump signed an executive order Thursday targeting discrimination by banks against conservative groups, directing regulators to investigate and punish financial institutions for “politicized or unlawful debanking.”
Stephen Miran, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, has been appointed by President Trump to fill the just-vacated seat on the Federal Reserve Board. Miran’s term will run until Jan. 31, 2026.
