Good Morning! On this day in 1851, the U.S. schooner America beat Britain in a race around the Isle of Wight, claiming a silver trophy later gifted to the New York Yacht Club for perpetual international competition. That prize, the “America’s Cup,” is now the world’s oldest continuously contested sporting trophy.

We always suspected it, and now neuroscience confirms it: our best ideas don’t strike when we’re grinding through tasks, but when we finally let our minds wander. Read more in Science.

TAKEOFF.

Trump Fraud Fine Overturned.

A New York state appeals court on Thursday tossed out a $500 million civil fraud penalty against President Donald Trump, ruling it violated the Constitution’s ban on excessive fines.

The court upheld the underlying judgment that Trump and his company overstated asset values to secure favorable loans and insurance, but said the state failed to justify the massive financial penalty.

Sanctions limiting Trump and his top executives’ ability to run New York businesses remain in effect.

Attorney General Letitia James said she plans to appeal the decision to the state’s highest court.

Illegal Immigrant Numbers Fall by 1.5 Million.

The U.S. illegal immigrant population dropped by 1.5 million in the first half of 2025, marking the first decline in five decades.

Pew Research estimates the illegal immigrant population reached a record 14 million in 2023, fueled by migrants arriving from outside Mexico and record parole releases under former President Biden.

Homeland Security says 1.6 million have voluntarily left since January, and ICE has deported more than 330,000 in 200 days. The Trump administration has set a target of one million deportations per year.

Evangelist James Dobson Dead at 89.

Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential evangelical leaders of the past 50 years, died Thursday at age 89.

A psychologist and prolific author, Dobson built Focus into a global Christian media powerhouse and later launched the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute.

At its peak under Dobson’s leadership, the Focus on the Family daily radio program was carried on more than 4,000 stations across North America. The broadcasts were also translated into 27 languages and distributed in over 160 countries.

He advised five U.S. presidents and became a key figure in conservative politics, championing traditional family values and opposing abortion and same-sex marriage. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, their two children, and two grandchildren.
