Monday, May 12, 2025.
Good Morning! On this day in 1926, the airship Norge, led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Italian engineer Umberto Nobile, and American aviator Lincoln Ellsworth, became the first verified aircraft to fly over the North Pole.
In today’s Flyover, we’re featuring the story of five fishermen who spent 55 days adrift at sea, surviving on rusted engine water and parboiled fish.

TAKEOFF.
Trump to Hire 20,000 New Deportation Officers.
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to recruit 20,000 additional officers to enforce immigration laws, aiming to triple the current ICE workforce.
This move is part of “Project Homecoming,” a self-deportation initiative offering undocumented migrants a $1,000 stipend and free flights to encourage voluntary departure.
The administration plans to deputize local law enforcement and potentially utilize military personnel for support roles in deportation efforts.
Qatar Offers Trump Luxury Jet for Official Use.
The Trump administration is preparing to accept a $400 million luxury Boeing 747-8 from Qatar’s royal family for temporary use as Air Force One, with plans to transfer it to the Trump presidential library foundation after his term ends.
Trump is expected to address the arrangement during his May 13–16 trip to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, though Qatari officials say no final decision has been made.
The trip aims to secure more than $3 trillion in investment deals tied to energy, aviation, and infrastructure.
Trump will meet with Gulf leaders and attend a major business summit in Riyadh alongside U.S. executives like Elon Musk.
Momentum Builds for Alberta as 51st US State.
Support for Alberta’s separation from Canada is on the rise, with 36% of residents in favor, according to a new poll. Some are now pushing to make the province the 51st U.S. state.
The election of liberal Mark Carney as Canada’s prime minister last week has increased pressure from some Albertans to make the move. They cite federal restrictions they believe are holding the oil-rich region back.
Alberta’s premier, Danielle Smith, has proposed a referendum on independence for 2026 if a citizen petition gathers signatures from at least 10% of eligible voters.
Smith is not personally in favor of the move, but has said that if Ottawa continues to attack the province as it has over the last decade, “ultimately that will be for Albertans to decide.”
