TAKEOFF,

15 Dead in Suspected ISIS Plot in New Orleans,

An early New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, Louisiana that left 15 dead and at least 30 injured is being investigated as an act of terrorism, authorities said. The number of victims may change.

Police and FBI officials said a man, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen from Texas and an Army veteran, intentionally drove a pickup truck into a crowded area of Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, killing and injuring bystanders.

Following the incident, he engaged in a gun battle with the police, who ultimately shot him dead at the scene.

Police found multiple explosive devices at the scene, and an ISIS flag was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle. The FBI believes the suspect wasn’t acting alone.

Wednesday’s Sugar Bowl has been postponed to today at 3 p.m. CT.

U.S. Sanctions Iran and Russia,

The White House announced new sanctions against Russia and Iran on Tuesday, alleging both countries attempted to influence the 2024 election.

Officials claim organizations affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a Russian intelligence agency targeted the election process through disinformation campaigns designed to divide the American people.

U.S. intelligence believes Russia favored President-elect Trump and pushed numerous false videos, while Iran backed Vice President Harris and pushed disinformation in Spanish.

Both Russia and Iran have denied the allegations, with one Iranian official calling them “unfounded.”

College Football Quarterfinals,

Yesterday’s College Football Playoff schedule began the day with three planned quarterfinal matchups, but the Sugar Bowl showdown between 2-seed Georgia and 7-seed Notre Dame was cancelled due to the deadly terror attack in New Orleans.

As of last night, the game was scheduled for today at 4 ET.

In the Peach Bowl, 5-seed Texas found a way to beat 4-seed Arizona State in a double-overtime thriller, 39-31. Texas had a commanding lead in the 4th quarter, but RB Cam Skattebo helped the Sun Devils erase the lead with several big plays. In OT, the Longhorns found the endzone on a 4th down and then quickly scored the game’s last TD on their next possession.

Later, 8-seed Ohio State dominated top-seeded Oregon in the Rose Bowl, 41-21. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 31-0 lead and were never seriously challenged, led by QB Will Howard’s 319 passing yards and three touchdowns.
