TAKEOFF.
US-Russia Standoff Hits India With 50% Tariff.
President Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50% Wednesday, citing the country’s continued imports of Russian oil as a help to Russia financing the war in Ukraine.
The move follows an earlier 25% tariff and comes days before Trump’s deadline for a Ukraine cease-fire.
Meanwhile, Trump is preparing for a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to push for a peace deal, following special envoy Steve Witkoff’s trip to Moscow this week.
The White House says Trump is also open to talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, though no date or location has been announced.
Five Soldiers Shot at Georgia Army Base.
Five soldiers were injured in a shooting at Georgia’s Fort Stewart on Wednesday, prompting a temporary lockdown of the base and nearby schools.
The suspected shooter, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, allegedly used his personal handgun during what officials described as a workplace incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.
He was tackled by other soldiers and apprehended within 40 minutes, and is now in pretrial confinement.
The victims are in stable condition, and the motive remains unclear.
ESPN Inks NFL, Wrestling Mega-Deals.
Disney-owned ESPN announced a series of landmark sports deals this week, including the acquisition of NFL Network and other NFL properties and a separate agreement for rights to WWE’s WrestleMania and other marquee wrestling events.
The NFL deal, announced Tuesday, saw ESPN giving up a 10% equity stake in exchange for NFL Network and NFL RedZone. Analysts say that stake could be worth $2 billion to $3 billion for the NFL.
On Wednesday, ESPN acquired streaming rights to all WWE Premium Live Events for the next five years, which includes the popular WrestleMania shows. That deal totaled $1.6 billion, or roughly $325 million per year.
News of the programming investments comes just a few weeks before ESPN launches its new streaming service, set to debut Aug. 21 for $29.99 a month.
POLITICS.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn announced Wednesday that she’s running for governor of Tennessee in 2026, positioning herself as a pro-Trump conservative and aiming to become the state’s first female governor.
President Trump threatened Tuesday to place Washington, D.C., under federal control, citing rising youth violence, after the 19-year-old former DOGE staffer known online as “Big Balls” was assaulted by teenagers in a weekend carjacking attempt.
The White House has officially ended a policy requiring federal employees to email weekly updates listing five accomplishments, a system introduced by former DOGE head Elon Musk.
