Good Morning! On this day in 1945, computer pioneer Grace Hopper discovered the first known case of a computer “bug.” It turned out to be an actual moth found between the relay contacts of an early Harvard Mark II computer. Hopper taped the dead moth into her logbook report.

Court OKs Broad Rules for ICE Stops.
The Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower-court order that had limited federal immigration patrols in Los Angeles, allowing agents to resume broad stops while the case continues.
The 6-3 decision temporarily lets Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pull people over for questioning based on criteria such as a person speaking Spanish or working in a specific profession.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that the lower court had overreached by limiting the stops only to cases showing “reasonable cause,” while Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, warning of potential violations of constitutional rights.
Federal officials say more than 5,000 arrests have been made in the region since June, and a hearing in the case is set for Sept. 24.
Murdoch Succession Finally Set.
The Murdoch family has settled its years-long dispute over control of the Fox and News Corp. empire, giving control of the company to Rupert Murdoch’s son Lachlan, who has been running it for the past few years.
Family members James Murdoch, Elizabeth Murdoch, and Prudence MacLeod will each receive over a billion dollars in separate trusts in exchange for relinquishing their shared control of the company, which includes Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post.
Lachlan is the more conservative of the family members, and the deal is seen as cementing Rupert Murdoch’s current political direction for the global media empire.
Fugitive New Zealand Dad Killed.
For nearly four years, New Zealand father Tom Phillips hid in the wilderness with his three children before being killed in a police shootout Sunday after a burglary attempt.
Phillips disappeared with his three children, Jayda, 12, Maverick, 10, and Ember, 9, in 2021 following a custody dispute, and lived with them in remote bushland, surviving in makeshift shelters and off the land.
The case captivated New Zealand as Phillips evaded authorities for years, tied to thefts, a bank robbery, and recent break-ins that suggested growing desperation. See a photo of the family hiking.

Chief Justice John Roberts ruled that President Trump can remove a member of the Federal Trade Commission for now, temporarily overruling a lower court decision while the full Supreme Court reviews the case.
The White House asked the Supreme Court on Monday to allow it to freeze billions of dollars in foreign-aid spending that an appeals court had said must be used before the funding expired on Sept. 30.
Postal shipments to the U.S. from overseas are down 80% since the government ended the tariff exemption for packages valued at $800 or less. Over 80 international providers have suspended shipping while a system for paying tariffs on small packages is put in place.
French legislators ousted Prime Minister François Bayrou in a no-confidence vote Monday over his controversial efforts to slash public spending, toppling the current government. The move forces President Emmanuel Macron to seek his fourth prime minister in 12 months.
