TAKEOFF.
Trump, Netanyahu Unveil Gaza Plan.
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday unveiled a joint plan to end the Gaza war, dependent on Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire and releasing all hostages within 72 hours of Israel accepting the proposal.
The 20-point framework would create a temporary “Board of Peace,” to be chaired by Trump and joined by former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, to oversee Gaza’s governance and reconstruction, with Israeli withdrawal tied to Hamas disarmament.
Netanyahu also apologized in a “heart-to-heart” call with Qatar’s leader for Israel’s recent strike on Hamas officials in Doha, which killed a Qatari serviceman and drew sharp regional backlash.
The Palestinian government in the West Bank welcomed Trump’s proposal and pledged reforms, including elections and an end to militant stipends. Hamas negotiators are reviewing the deal, but their refusal to disarm remains the key obstacle.
Imelda, Humberto Threaten US Coast.
Two powerful storms are currently churning in the Atlantic, and while Tropical Storm Imelda and Hurricane Humberto aren’t currently forecast to strike the U.S. directly, they’re bringing heavy weather to the East Coast.
Imelda is forecast to become a hurricane on Tuesday before curving out to sea, but its rains, high surf, and rip currents will pound Florida through the Carolinas into midweek. Officials in Florida say a man was killed after getting caught in a rip current over the weekend.
Humberto, a Category 4 storm near Bermuda, is also generating dangerous swells that are driving toward the U.S., creating hazardous beach conditions over several days from Florida to Virginia.
Baseball Wild Card Playoffs Start Today.
The baseball postseason opens today with four wild card matchups, including a matchup this evening between the New York Yankees and their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the playoff lineup is the team that isn’t there: the New York Mets. The team held the best record in baseball halfway through the summer before collapsing at season’s end. Mets owner Steve Cohen apologized to New York fans on Monday.
The defending world champion Los Angeles Dodgers—the team with the biggest payroll in baseball—are back to defend their title, starting with a match against the Cincinnati Reds tonight.
The wild card round will run from today through Thursday night, with best-of-three winners advancing to divisional matchups this weekend. The World Series is slated to kick off on Oct. 24.
