Good Morning! On this day in 1652, 28-year-old Massachusetts silversmith John Hull opened the first mint in America, in defiance of English colonial law. The mint produced coins from 1652 to 1682, and as compensation, Hull was allowed to keep 6% of all the silver he minted.
Yesterday, we asked how your sleep habits might stack up against your lifespan. The answers were thoughtful, funny, and wildly varied: chronic insomniacs, power nappers, early birds, and an 87-year-old who walks daily and rarely skips a day. California Sues Trump Over Guard Use.
California filed a lawsuit against President Trump on Monday over his decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles amid escalating immigration protests, calling the move unconstitutional.
About 500 U.S. Marines assigned to Twentynine Palms began deploying to Los Angeles on Monday to protect federal buildings. Defense officials said the Marines will not directly engage with protesters and will operate under U.S. Northern Command.
While California officials and some media reporters have described the protests as “mostly peaceful,” the unrest has included scorched Waymo self-driving cars and widespread vandalism. Waymo temporarily suspended its downtown service for safety reasons.
Protesters have been filmed spitting on and burning American flags while chanting profane slogans.
Trump, CEOs Push Infant Savings Plan.
President Trump is championing a proposal to grant every U.S. infant born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2029, a $1,000 tax-deferred investment account, dubbed “Trump Accounts.”
The initiative, part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” aims to promote long-term financial growth for children.
At a White House roundtable on Monday, CEOs from companies like Dell, Uber, and Goldman Sachs expressed support, with Dell pledging to match the government’s contribution for employees’ children.
The accounts would be managed by parents or guardians, and additional contributions up to $5,000 annually would be allowed. Funds could be accessed starting at age 18 for approved expenses such as education, home purchases, or starting a business.
Israel Stops Gaza ‘Selfie Yacht’.
Israeli forces boarded a Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists Monday, calling it a “selfie yacht” stunt and redirecting it to Ashdod, a major Israeli port.
The group, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was intercepted before breaking the naval blockade. Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered that they be shown Oct. 7 Hamas attack footage, so they understand who they’re backing.
Photos showed IDF soldiers handing out sandwiches and water, with Thunberg seen smiling during the encounter.
President Trump later criticized Thunberg, saying she should “go to an anger management class” and calling her “a young, angry person.”
POLITICS.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday announced he was retiring all 17 members of a crucial government panel of vaccine advisors, saying, “A clean sweep is needed to re-establish public confidence in vaccine science.”
President Trump spoke with Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday regarding Iran and said the call went well, adding that he is “trying to avoid death and destruction.”
A federal judge declined to block President Trump’s removal of three board members of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, ruling the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate a strong likelihood the firings were unlawful.
The U.S. Small Business Administration announced this weekend that it would relocate its regional office from Los Angeles due to the city’s lack of cooperation with immigration enforcement.

Warner Bros. Discovery will split into two companies to stabilize its finances: one will include HBO and Warner Bros. movies and TV as a studio and streaming company, while the other will be a cable company including CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery.
Amazon will spend $20 billion on two data center complexes in Pennsylvania, including one alongside a nuclear power plant from which it wants to draw power.
U.S. home listing prices hit an all-time high, with the total value of homes for sale rising 20.3% from a year ago to a record $698 billion, according to the real estate firm Redfin.
