Mamdani Beats Cuomo in NYC Primary.
Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani won the first round of the Democratic primary for New York City mayor Tuesday by a surprisingly large margin over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo called Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani to congratulate him on the victory, then said his campaign was “going to take a look and make some decisions.”
The race will be officially decided by ranked choice voting since no candidate received 50% in the first round.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, held 43.5% of the vote to Cuomo’s 36.3% with 80% of the votes counted by late Tuesday night.

The House on Tuesday easily defeated an effort by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) to impeach President Trump over the U.S. strikes on Iran, voting 344-79 to table the measure, with 128 Democrats agreeing with Republicans.
New Yorkers voted in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday, but they won’t know the winner until July 1, according to the city Board of Elections. The ranked-choice results will take a week to tabulate, and only preliminary results from early rounds will be known before then.
President Trump’s political team has launched a new super PAC devoted to defeating Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie in his 2026 primary, the first effort by the White House to unseat a sitting member of Congress. Massie had opposed Trump’s attack on Iran’s nuclear sites.
