Good Morning! On this day in 1910, the most evenly matched game in baseball history was played between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Brooklyn Superbas, now the Dodgers. The two teams played to an 8-8 tie, with both having exactly 38 at-bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, two errors, five strikeouts, three walks, one passed ball, and one hit-by-pitch in what George F. Will called “the baseball game of perfect symmetry.”

In today’s Science section, we’re talking about a brand-new cat color scientists have just discovered, with a striking “salty licorice” look.

TAKEOFF.

July Inflation Report Sparks Market Rally.

U.S. consumer prices rose 2.7% in July from a year earlier, slightly below forecasts and unchanged from June, while core inflation increased 3.1% with housing costs leading gains.

Food prices were flat, energy declined, and some tariff-affected goods saw modest increases.

The softer-than-expected reading boosted market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September, and stocks rallied on the news, sending the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to record highs and lifting the Dow nearly 500 points.

30-Day Federal Takeover of D.C. Begins.

President Trump began a 30-day federal takeover of Washington’s police force on Tuesday, citing a crime emergency as 800 National Guard members arrived in the city.

Mayor Muriel Bowser pledged to work with federal officials while noting local crime rates are already declining.

The White House said federal officers made 23 arrests and cleared dozens of homeless encampments on the first night of operations.

Protests have grown alongside the federal crackdown. Adam Swart, CEO of crowd rental firm Crowds on Demand, said requests for demonstrators in Washington are up 400% from last year and that the vast majority of attendees at political events are paid or participating as part of their work duties.

America’s Best Selling Cars in 2025, So Far.

America’s top-selling vehicles in the first half of 2025 were once again led by the Ford F-Series, which moved 412,848 units, maintaining its decades-long dominance.

Close behind were the Chevrolet Silverado with 284,038 sales and the Toyota RAV4 with 239,451, the highest-ranked SUV.

Nine of the top 10 sellers were pickups or SUVs, underscoring U.S. buyers’ preference for size, capability, and versatility over sedans.

The Toyota Camry was the lone sedan in the top 10, while overall SUVs made up 47% of top-20 sales, pickups 37%, and sedans just 16%.
