Scripture

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. Romans 4:20 and 21 KJV

Devotion

For the last two years, God has pointed me to the story of Abraham.

Most of us know the story. God promised Abraham that he would be the “father of a multitude of nations” in Genesis 17:5. But when God made this promise, Abraham was 99, well beyond childbearing years. His wife Sarah was 90. By all accounts, this was physically impossible.

Even Abraham was skeptical. At first, he flat out laughed. “Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” (Genesis 17:17).

But once the shock wore off, Abraham believed. He followed God’s commands and he had faith. And it wasn’t just a little faith, our verse of the day says he was “fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised.”

I love the phrase “fully convinced.” Against all odds, against all his understanding, Abraham had no doubts that God would fulfill His promises.

The last few years, God has called me to do things that didn’t make sense to me, things that were scary and uncertain. But He’s continued to point me to Abraham, showing me that He will fulfill His promises even if I don’t see how it’s possible. It may not look how I expect it to–I’m sure Abraham and Sarah didn’t expect to have a newborn at almost 100 years old.

But it’s not up to me to understand the plan. It’s up to me to trust that the One who made the plan is faithful, sovereign, and good. And it’s up to me to accept that my understanding is so limited, and that God can do “to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).

My prayer is that my faith will be as strong as Abraham’s. That in times when God’s callings seem terrifying, impossible, even laughable, that I’ll put my own understanding aside and have faith in God alone, “for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23).
