Christians, our souls, hearts, and minds are joined in one body with Christ as the head. That is a given. Paul does not urge us to build unity, he simply states it is a reality for everyone who follows Jesus. So, we must maintain unity with eagerness.
In John 17, we get a very intimate insight into the heart of God through the prayer of Jesus.
“That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us.” Why? “So that the world may believe that you have sent me” (v. 21).
“I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one.” Why? “So that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me” (v. 23).
I feel privileged to be part of a ministry where so many different Christians, from a wide variety of cultures, church traditions, and backgrounds, come together in unity to share the Gospel with the world. My natural tendency is to see the differences and make them an issue; my own state of mind creates chaos and disunity. Thank God for Christ in me as He shapes me to be humble, gentle, patient, and loving.
More than ever, this world needs a Church united, not by their own laws and behaviors, but by the bond of peace through the Holy Spirit, made possible through Jesus Christ. He lives in us so that we may be humble, gentle, patient, and full of love to each other. Why? So that the world can see that Jesus is the Son of God.
