Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. – Luke 21:28 NKJV
Devotion.
The things Jesus refers to in our verse for today are the events or signs leading our Redeemer’s return to rule and reign. Beginning in verse 25, Jesus speaks to great global upheavals. It is a warning. There will be catastrophic cosmic and environmental events. There will be distresses among nations. Confusion and perplexity will rule the day. People will be at their wit’s end as the world will be morally bankrupt. Anxiety, panic, and fear will grip people’s hearts and minds.
Are we there yet? The Bible tells us that no one knows the day or hour of our Lord’s return (Matthew 24:36), but it sure seems to me like redemption is close. Whether today, tomorrow, or next year, what is important for the believer to grasp is to be ready now. In all the turmoil that seems to be going on in the world, we are not to be afraid or cowering, but rather we are to stand up with our heads held high for truth and righteousness, knowing the Lord could arrive at any time.
I think all believers should be living in great anticipation of our Lord’s coming. It is much the same sentiment Paul shared in Philippians 3:14 declaring, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” The mark being the finish line in a race, pressing forward with an outstretched neck to win victory.
With political chaos reigning, heroes being replaced by celebrities, policy being informed by “likes” and “follows,” know all that is popular and all the talk of the town today, can be gone tomorrow. Anything and everything the world has to offer, whether good or bad, is only temporal. But as Jesus goes on to say in Luke 21:33, “heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.” We are to live our lives grounded in the supremacy and authority of Jesus Christ.
As crazy as the world seems to be, Christians need not cower in fear. The signs reveal the King is on the way. He tells us to have joy because our redemption draws near. So, remember to always look up!

In publishing the life of the late CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON, the publishers feel a peculiar pleasure and believe themselves especially fortunate in having secured the Rev. Russell H. Conwell, D.D., LL.D., pastor at The Temple, of Philadelphia, to prepare the work. There are many reasons why the popular preacher, who might justly be called the Spurgeon of America, should in this way pay a loving tribute to the memory of his great English ecclesiastical brother, and why such a book must have an absorbing interest for all readers. Foremost among these might be considered his personal acquaintance with the great divine of gigantic efforts and wonderful achievements, and the deep study he has ever given to his popular brother preacher’s life and the measure of its successes.
