Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – John 14:6 NKJV
Devotion
Jesus was not a relativist. For the relativism of our present era, there is no one way, truth, and life. Every way, truth, and life is just as good as any other. The strict relativist must reject the absolute statement of Jesus in our verse for today, because Jesus allows for no alternatives. If you want to get to the Father, if you want to be reconciled to the Father, then you must go through Jesus.
Jesus’ statement in this passage is the sixth of the seven “I am” statements found in the Gospel of John. In these statements, Jesus makes known who He is and what happens when we come to believe in Him. In this particular one, Jesus claims that He is the way, truth, and life, and what happens when we accept this is that we have access to the Father.
Jesus is the way, because there is no other way to be reconciled to the Father except through Him. He is the truth, because there is no other truth that can reconcile us to the Father except Him. And He is the life, because there is no other life that can give us reconciliation with the Father except His. As can be seen in our verse for today, Jesus makes exclusive claims about His significance in the great scheme of things.
The exclusivity of Jesus’ claims about Himself is the main reason why the missionary endeavours of the Christian Church in all its many forms are so important. If Jesus is the only way, then the world must be told about Him.
The exclusivity of Jesus’ claims about Himself, however, is also the main reason why Christians encounter opposition from time to time from some of the relativists of the world we live in. If Jesus is proclaimed around the world as being the only way, then this is a direct challenge to the relativism of their vision of life.
As has been the case since the time of Christ himself, those who follow His way must be prepared for any opposition that may come from those who reject His way.
