But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6 ESV
Devotion
Seven years ago, I was at the end of my rope. The truth was, I was mentally exhausted, depressed, and hopeless. I was at a place of complete powerlessness over my circumstances, my situations, and even my sin. I could not manage my life.
I felt defeated, but that’s exactly where God wanted me to be. I had been carrying the world on my shoulders. I thought that if I let go of controlling people, places, and things, the world would fall apart.
Eventually I realized that the root of all my problems was my pride. I had placed myself in God’s position, and His shoes are impossible to fill. Every time things didn’t go the way I wanted, I would not turn to God like I should have. Instead, I turned to sin.
The verse of the day shows that God is willing to help those that come to Him, but the only way to do that is to admit that we are not God, and we cannot work through this life without Him. That takes humility. The truth is, pride stands in the way of our usefulness to our fellow man, and keeps us from seeking God, because we think we can handle everything ourselves. We don’t seek God if we think we can do life without Him.
When we realize we absolutely need God and turn to Him, He is there waiting, as a loving, patient father. When we seek Him, we find Him (Matthew 7:7) and just like the prodigal son’s father, He will come running toward us with His arms wide open to welcome us.
