Scripture

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23 KJV

Devotion

I think Matthew 7:21-23 is one of the scariest passages in the Bible. It’s scary because it teaches that there are people who say Jesus is Lord and do all the right things but are not known by Him. It’s scary because if someone who prophesies, drives out demons, and performs wonders can’t make it into Christ’s Kingdom, then what hope is there for the rest of us?

Anyone who has been a Christian for a while has heard stories of people who seemingly lived their lives as Christians only to confess later in life that they never really believed. I’ve heard stories of people who were ministers only to confess later that they were just doing what was expected of them without truly believing any of it. Deception seems to be a real possibility in a believer’s life.

Some people raised in the church are especially susceptible to deception. Some grow up being taught what to say and do like everyone else, but they never truly had a genuine salvation experience. They say and do all the right things to keep up appearances, or to keep their positions and places in the circles they move in. Some even manipulate those around them for their own selfish reasons. Seemingly doing the will of God, they don’t really do anything of the kind.

Our verses for today are a call for honest self-examination, a call to cut through any deception there may be in our lives. Are we being honest with ourselves? Periodically asking questions like these can help us to be sure that we’re known by Jesus.
