She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8:11 KJV.
Devotion
No one enjoys being evaluated. Now, I am not just referring to the annual employee evaluation or annual physical, rather I am talking about the deep examination process that God does with each of us throughout the day.
Through the Holy Spirit, we are alerted of what we may be hiding behind the unintended facade. Sometimes, when we dismiss the Lord’s promptings, He will send those near us to speak words of encouragement, warnings, and even confront us of our wrong doings. Yet, being called out, in private or in a public setting, never sits well.
In today’s verse, we are reminded of the story of the adulterous woman when she was confronted of her immorality in a public setting. Everyone knew what she did was clearly wrong according to the law—the Ten Commandments. We also know that the intent of the Pharisees was to build a case against Jesus and not necessarily bring about spiritual renewal to the woman. In John 8:1-11, we see Jesus’ reaction to the revelation of her lifestyle and the solution He gave to those who condemned her. We see His perfect love in action and how He invites this woman to accept a new way of living.
Yet how does “I don’t judge you either. You can go now, but don’t sin again” help us today? As believers, we are called to be set apart, to be different than those who don’t know God and do not follow biblical teachings. “Go and sin no more” means that we have a new identity in Christ. Our new identity brings tremendous responsibilities as we are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). We can no longer think about our personal interest and do the things we desire. Some of those activities may not aligned with God’s will for our lives or help us reflect inwardly or outwardly the change we should display as sons and daughters of the Most High.
Yet, “I don’t judge you either. You can go now, but don’t sin again” should give you comfort and peace. These very words Jesus spoke to the adulterous woman, should remind us that no matter where we are at, there is a loving Father who wants us reconciled with Him. That is the Good News of this passage! Take heart that even in the moments when we are called out—in private or in the public—God is good enough and merciful enough. He tells us, “Shake the shame away, dust yourself off, get reconnected with Me, and move forward without living as you once were.” Psalm 51:16-17 reminds us that it is not the sacrifice that delights the Lord rather a humble spirit.
Our challenge for today is to dig deep and ask several questions. How are you doing with your attitude and your actions? What promptings from the Holy Spirit have you ignored? What spiritual encouragement or advice have you dismissed? What areas in your life are not aligned with being set apart? What things do you do repeatedly because you are counting on God’s merciful and glorious grace? Take note of the words, thoughts, and actions you have taken against yourself and those near you.
As you reflect on these questions, pray and praise God for the following promise: “But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done” (1 John 1:9).
