Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16 ESV
Devotion
Bask in the wonderous truths of our verse for today. Draw near to God with confidence. Remember the last time you had an uncomfortable meeting? Even with much preparation, there is that twinge of nervousness. Or as a child getting sent to the principal’s office—there was a feeling of anxiety. Perhaps you have been misunderstood, abused, or even persecuted. Take heart, the King of kings and Lord of lords invites us to come before His throne of grace with confidence. It certainly is not because we have done no wrong. It is based solely on His grace. His grace through His Son Jesus Christ.
When we come before His throne through prayer, with hearts willing and open, we will receive mercy and grace to help in time of need. Again, this is no light matter. Creator God, who holds all power and authority, desires to and will give us mercy and grace in our current situation. Verse 15 tells us that Jesus Christ sympathizes with our weaknesses. Not only does He have compassion, but He experienced humanity in all its weakness, yet without sin. Therefore, we have a High Priest who understands us and intercedes on our behalf.
God’s grace gives us what we do not deserve, namely eternal life through His Son. This is the glorious Gospel. He is our rock and our firm foundation, a shelter in the time of storm. He can be trusted for He is faithful and true. He is the everlasting one and the Alpha and Omega. He is omnipotent and omniscient, and He calls you by name.
God’s grace gives us the ability to endure beyond our limitations. The Holy Spirit enables us to obey and trust God. The Holy Spirit empowers us to persevere in faith. These are all manifestations of God’s grace.
This is God’s invitation to lay our burdens down at His feet. It is such a precious promise. When we are in deep struggle or just daily living, we need God’s grace. And we have it when we ask! We can exhale from the trouble we are experiencing. The Apostle Paul was told God’s grace is sufficient as Paul experienced weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). God had a higher purpose. God’s power and glory would be displayed through Paul’s weakness, and God’s grace would be sufficient that Paul would endure and even rejoice.
God’s grace also equips us that we may abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8). Allow God’s grace to help you as you serve in the small and large tasks of life. It is God’s grace that enables us to serve and give with grateful hearts. Each day, every moment God’s grace is needed and available.
Friend, we are all desperately in need of God’s grace and mercy. May we humbly, with great confidence, go before His throne to find the daily help we need. Rejoice! God’s grace is upon you.
