From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. – Psalm 61:2 NKJV

Devotion

Overwhelmed.

It was the only word I could come up with. I sat in my counselor’s office trying to find ways to describe my feelings, but I could only muster up one word: overwhelmed.

It was a myriad of things that caused my sense of drowning. The life of a new parent. The constant struggles in multiple relationships. The pressure of hard choices that only I could make. I had come to my breaking point.

Later that week, as I was casually searching the web, I came across something that has stuck with me. I don’t remember what I was looking at, I don’t remember how I found it, but I’m so glad I did. It was a Psalm I’d never read in a translation I don’t normally use.

“When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2 NKJV).

There was that word again, but this time, it was attached to hope. I had never fully grasped what it meant for God’s Word to be “alive and active” (Hebrews 4:12), but in that moment, I got it. The words jumped off the page and soothed my aching soul.

How comforting to know that the Creator of the universe sees me. The God who sees war and famine and life and death, the God who is in control of every living thing, sees me. He sees my situation, He sees my fears, my stress, my worries, and He speaks to me. He uses His Word to call to me, to be an answer in my current daily life.

He saw that I was overwhelmed, and He gave me a verse that called out my specific emotion. Then, He called me to rest. He called me to hope. He called me to safety. He called me to the Rock.

This verse became my prayer for months. When I had no other words, I prayed this verse over and over. The situations didn’t change, but my heart did. The stress didn’t vanish, but my faith grew.

The funny thing is, I don’t own a copy of a New King James Bible. The word “overwhelmed” isn’t used in any of the translations I typically read. I would’ve never seen this verse had He not put it in front of me that day.

Praise God that He’s so present in the details. Praise God that His Word is alive and active. Praise God that when I am overwhelmed, He is my rock.
