I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will continually be in my mouth. – Psalm 34:1 ESV
Devotion
Consider for a moment the grace of God. What is it and what has it done for you? It was by grace that we have been saved. It was by grace alone and not by our works. It was God’s pure grace that He looked on us while we were yet sinners and called us into a forgiven relationship with Him. The Roberta Martin Singers sang these lyrics, “Grace woke me up this morning, Grace started me on my way, Grace will make you love your enemies, His grace, will give you, the victory.”
The grace of God desires people to be spared and united with Him. His grace pulled us from the awaiting of hell and instead afforded us the entrance into heaven’s marvelous gates. The question is, if we have been given this grace, how do you personally respond?
Consider the verse of today, “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1). What does it mean for us to bless the Lord? How do we bless the Lord? We often ask God to bless us. We ask Him to bless our many different efforts. But, how do we bless God?
One way of thinking through how to bless God is to declare God is the only one with such power. To clarify, there is no way we can give power to God; rather it takes us to declare boldly that He has said power. It’s giving credit where credit is due.
To bless also means “to speak well.” Your version may also say “I will extol.” Extol means to praise enthusiastically! Declare back to God His greatness! Thank Him for sustaining and providing you with all that you have! Ephesians 5:20 says, “…Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
If you could start today by blessing God, what would that look like? In what way will you bless Him as you live in appreciation for His grace?
