Scripture

And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” – Genesis 32:27-28 ESV

Devotion

Who are you? That question may seem simple, but it’s a question often overlooked. Knowing who you are is an important part of your walk with God. When we think of the grace of God, a part of what we look at is who He has called us to be.

God changes us and even sometimes distinguishes that change with a new sense of identity, calling, classification, or sometimes a new name. Consider the way God has changed the names of some people in the Bible. Let’s look at Jacob whose name means deceiver or heel grabber. After having some struggles in life and literally wrestling with God, his name was changed to Israel. Israel means he who struggles with God.

This name change was a shift in his self-perception…Jacob, now Israel, would transition from deceptive ways and from being deceived (as he was by his own father-in-law) to now having reliance upon God. A new walk and purpose were springing forth.

In what way is God molding you? If He were calling you to new things, how receptive are you to that change? Do you know the meaning of your name? If you are about to have a child, are you considering what the name you give your child means? It is important that we know who we are as we live this life. We must walk with a purpose in all that we do. God’s saving grace is upon you, it has changed you, and you have a new identity in Him. Don’t just exist. Live with purpose as you embrace who you are.
