Verse of the Day

February 2nd, 2023

Scripture

For this reason, Jesus had to be made like us, his brothers and sisters, in every way. He became like people so that he could be their merciful and faithful high priest in service to God. Then he could bring forgiveness for the people’s sins. – Hebrews 2:17 ERV

Devotion

Have you ever been tempted or suffered in a way that was all-consuming? Maybe you’ve had obsessive thoughts that won’t relent, dealt with serious relationship problems, or have suffered physically or mentally.

Often it just seems like others don’t understand what we are going through. They may try to help but do not understand. They may dismiss the hardship and give some flippant advice. Because they haven’t struggled with it, they have a hard time empathizing.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let’s reflect on the name Immanuel (God with us) and recognize that this isn’t just a nice concept, but an amazing, wonderful, and deep reality. We have a God that doesn’t just stand at a distance, but one that comes down, steps into our pain, and feels the torture of sin. The writer of Hebrews goes onto say in verse 18, “He is able to help because He himself suffered and was tempted.”

The one who understands our pain has also overcome sin and has defeated death. He is the only one that can offer us forgiveness! He is interceding for us right at this moment. Who better to follow? Who better to have relationship with? Today, let us thank God that He takes us by the hand and shows us amazing grace.
