VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked…. Instead, his delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.” (Psalm 1:1)
The law of the Lord is the daily bread of the true believer. But, alas, what ill-treatment is given to this gift from heaven! We are not all searchers of the Scriptures like the Bereans (Acts 17:10–11). How few among us can lay claim to the blessing of the text! Perhaps some of you can claim a sort of negative purity because you do not walk in the way of the ungodly; but let me ask you—Is your delight in the law of God? Do you study God’s Word? Do you make it the man of your right hand—your best companion and hourly guide? If not, this blessing does not belong to you.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Father, we thank you for the Bible. We thank you for the glorious man, the God whom the Book reveals as our savior; and now we thank you for the blessed Spirit, for without his light upon the understanding we can learn nothing. The letter kills, it is the Spirit who gives life. Blessed are our eyes that have been touched with heavenly eye-salve. Blessed are the hearts that have been softened, that have been made ready to receive the truth in the love of it! Blessed be the sovereign grace of God that has chosen for himself a people who delight in his Word and who meditate on it both day and night!
Amen.
