Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. – 1 John 3:24 ESV

As a child, I struggled to follow rules. Maybe I didn’t break them out of spite, but there were many that seemed unimportant. Why did I need to stay in my seat during class? Did it really matter that my bedroom was a disaster area? Obeying the rules of my parents and teachers seemed like an obligation. I didn’t recognize that they were for my good. Thankfully, as an adult, I can see the merit behind these rules, and more importantly, I have learned that God’s rules are always for my good.

Throughout my life, I was always searching for God’s presence in a tangible way. I’d read about God speaking to people, I’d read about the miracles done in Scripture, but didn’t see God moving in my own life. The thing was, I wanted to know God, but I didn’t realize that the way to know Him was to obey Him.

The verse for today examines that. When I began surrendering my will to His will, I started to see God move in miraculous ways in my life. He taught me to take His concepts seriously, things like forgiveness, humility, confession, and honesty. Through obedience, even my imperfect obedience, God transformed my life and continues to transform me by His grace. He continues to reveal Himself in new ways all the time. Obedience stopped being an obligation and started to be a desire to get to know God better.

When I started to keep His commandments, I started to understand what John meant by God abiding in me and me in Him. His Spirit reminds me that He is with me every day. Today, ask God to show you where you can grow in obedience. Then you will begin to enjoy His presence in a deeper way.
