U.S. destroys five Iranian crude oil tankers

U.S. Central Command confirmed it has destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers in the latest round of strikes. The action followed two failed ballistic-missile attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on a U.S. Navy warship over the previous two days; the ship successfully evaded both salvos and no Americans were injured. CENTCOM stated the tankers formed part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its proxies. Crews were ordered to abandon the vessels before they were disabled in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island. The strikes continue a months-long campaign targeting Iranian oil infrastructure and shipping.

Trump escalates trade war with Canada

President Trump signed new proclamations banning imports of certain Canadian products—including dairy items, most alcoholic beverages, and motorcycles—effective September 29. The move responds to Canada’s latest retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of U.S. exports. Earlier 50% tariffs on Canadian goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 are also being adjusted, with some products removed and others added. Canada had already matched U.S. tariffs dollar-for-dollar. The White House framed the actions as necessary to counter ongoing Canadian discrimination against American commerce in autos, alcohol, and dairy.

Strong August jobs report

Manufacturing gained 16,000 positions and construction added 22,000. The White House highlighted the numbers as evidence of continued private-sector job growth since President Trump returned to office, while noting women have accounted for nearly all net payroll gains in recent months. Revisions also added tens of thousands of jobs to prior months.

Kavanaugh leaves Missouri map blocked

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh declined to lift a lower-court block on Missouri’s new congressional map in time for the November elections. The new map, which would have favored Republicans 7-1, was used in the state’s primaries but will not be used in the general election. Missouri must instead use the previous map that produced a 6-2 Republican edge. The decision keeps the current district lines in place for the midterms.
