TAKEOFF,

Jimmy Carter Dies at 100,

Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President, died yesterday in Plains, Georgia, as the oldest former president in U.S. history.

A peanut farmer from Georgia, Carter rose through the political ranks quickly to become governor and then president, defeating Gerald Ford in 1976.

His presidency from 1977 to 1981 saw achievements like the Camp David Accords but was overshadowed by economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis. Carter revamped his image post-presidency, becoming a champion for humanitarian causes and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter began receiving hospice care in February 2023 and celebrated his 100th birthday this past October.

South Korea Jet Crash Kills 179,

A Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed and burst into flames at an airport in South Korea on Sunday, killing 179 of the 181 people on board in one of the country’s deadliest aviation disasters.

The plane, arriving from Bangkok, apparently failed to deploy its landing gear and skidded off the runway at high speed before slamming into a concrete wall and exploding, according to television footage.

Approximately 1,570 firefighters, police officers, soldiers, and other rescue workers were dispatched to the scene following the crash.

Officials recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders while investigating whether bird strikes may have contributed to the crash. The crash occurred shortly after the control tower warned the crew about birds and permitted them to land at a different location.

Severe Weather Impacts Millions,

Severe weather, including deadly tornadoes, disrupted holiday travel over the weekend, delaying thousands of flights.

There were at least two storm-related deaths in the Southern U.S., where 34 tornadoes were reported across five states on Saturday.

Yesterday, tornadoes and high winds ripped through the Southeast, putting 20 million people at risk of flash flooding and property damage.

Meanwhile, a high surf advisory was in place on the West Coast through Sunday, as winter winds generated waves as high as 30 feet in some areas, resulting in one death.

POLITICS,

President-elect Donald Trump says he is in favor of visas for highly skilled immigrants after Elon Musk voiced support for the H-1B program that permits U.S. companies to hire foreign workers.

The Biden administration is set to send $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine as the president pushes for as much aid to Ukraine as possible before leaving office.

President Joe Biden privately regrets dropping out of the presidential race and believes he would have defeated President-elect Donald Trump in November’s election, according to multiple anonymous sources.
