THE FLYOVER,

Saturday, October 12, 2024,

Good Morning! On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas, believing he reached East Asia. He claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain, who sponsored his attempt to find a western ocean route to China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.

TAKEOFF,

Hurricane Milton Recovery Continues,

Hurricane Milton’s aftermath in Florida has left at least 16 dead and over 2 million without power as rescue crews continued to assist those stranded by floodwaters on Friday.

The White House said Friday that 1,000 federal personnel in Florida have conducted over 4,200 rescues and delivered 1.2 million meals, with 1.6 million more meals planned for delivery.

One of the more dramatic rescues occurred Thursday when a Coast Guard helicopter saved a man hanging on to a cooler about 30 miles off the coast.

There were signs of life returning to normal Friday as several theme parks and airports were scheduled to fully reopen.

Gold Mine Accident Leaves One Dead,

Authorities on Friday identified the victim of a Colorado gold mine accident that trapped nearly two dozen tourists hundreds of feet underground as Patrick Weier, the group’s tour guide.

According to reports, two groups of 12 tourists, including children, were touring Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek when an elevator malfunctioned, leaving one dead, four injured and the groups stuck below ground.

Authorities quickly rescued 11 people, including two children, but the other 12 remained in the mine for about six hours.

Colorado requires daily inspections of tourist mine attractions and transportation systems, but the last inspection date and records were not immediately available.

Northern Lights Seen Across U.S. and Europe,

A powerful solar storm triggered stunning northern lights displays, known as aurora borealis, across the U.S. and the world this week.

The geomagnetic storm, rated 4 out of 5 by NOAA, triggered widespread illuminations beyond its usual polar regions. The skies in Europe and the U.S. saw vivid magenta and green hues, reaching as far south as San Antonio, Texas.

Although severe solar storms can disrupt power and radio signals, no immediate issues were reported.

POLITICS,

A federal judge agreed to unseal more filings from special counsel Smith’s election interference case against former President Trump, a decision Trump’s lawyers indicated they would contest.

Authorities have opened a fifth corruption investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, involving his chief advisor and four others, according to published reports.

The White House announced Friday that President Biden will survey Hurricane Milton damage on Sunday, but it didn’t confirm if he’ll meet with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
