THE FLYOVER,

Thursday, October 31, 2024,

Good Morning! On this day in 1864, Nevada was admitted as the 36th state, despite having only 40,000 inhabitants—short of the 60,000 typically required—thanks to the wealth generated by Virginia City’s rich silver deposits discovered in 1859.

TAKEOFF,

Biden Tries to Clean Up ‘Garbage’ Remark,

The Biden administration continued its efforts to clarify President Biden’s remarks on Tuesday where he called supporters of former President Trump “garbage” during a call with Voto Latino.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre fielded several questions at Wednesday’s briefing, stating Biden was misinterpreted and that he was commenting on a joke made at Trump’s New York rally.

Vice President Harris was also questioned about Biden’s characterization of Trump supporters and said she was against, “any criticism of people based on who they voted for.”

In response to Biden’s comments, Trump introduced a new vehicle to his motorcade in Green Bay: a campaign-themed garbage truck. Trump spoke to reporters from inside the truck, comparing the “garbage” comment to Hillary Clinton’s famous “deplorables” gaff.

Trump then motored to his rally in the garbage truck and kept his orange safety vest on for his speech.

Supreme Court: Virginia Can Purge Registrations,

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted Virginia’s emergency request to remove over 1,600 voter registrations, aiming to prevent non-U.S. citizens from voting, and sent it to a lower appeals court for consideration.

This decision reverses a federal court’s Friday order granting the U.S. Justice Department’s request for an injunction blocking Virginia’s registration purge.

Justice Department lawyers argued that Virginia violated a “quiet period” before the election by moving so late to remove the names of voters it suspects aren’t U.S. citizens.

State officials said that even if the registrations of some U.S. citizens were purged by mistake, Virginia’s same-day voter registration policy ensures that they could still vote on Election Day.

Dodgers Win World Series in 5 Games,

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series Wednesday night, beating the New York Yankees 7-6 in a come-from-behind victory filled with Yankee errors and mistakes.

The Dodgers dominated the Yankees throughout the Series, taking the first three games behind the powerful hitting of Freddie Freeman. Freeman ended Game 1 with a 10th-inning walk-off grand slam and then set a record by hitting another home run every night until last night.

In Wednesday’s final game, the Yankees jumped out to an early 5-0 lead that lasted until the 5th inning, when three errors led to five unearned runs, tying the game 5-5. The Dodgers took the winning 7-6 lead in the 8th.

This marked the 12th time the two great baseball rivals have met, and only the fourth time that the Dodgers emerged as winners. The last time they played, in 1981, the Dodgers also won, four games to two.

POLITICS,

The Washington Post reported it had lost 250,000 subscribers—an increase from the previously reported 200,000—following its decision not to endorse Vice President Harris, resulting in a 10% decline in readership.

Authorities say evidence in the ballot box fires set in the Northwest point to the culprit being a balding man aged 30 to 40 with metalworking experience, partly based on the type of incendiary devices used, which were marked with the message “Free Gaza.”

U.S. officials confirmed on Wednesday that they conducted military airstrikes in central Syria’s desert, killing as many as 35 militants from the Islamic State group.
