TAKEOFF.

Trump Calls for Major Agency Reductions.

President Trump held the first Cabinet meeting of his presidency on Wednesday, directing agency heads to submit proposals for large-scale federal workforce reductions by March 13.

Administration adviser Elon Musk attended the meeting and emphasized the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) role, warning that the U.S. couldn’t sustain $2 trillion deficits with national debt interest surpassing Defense Department spending.

A memo was also issued, directing agencies to work with DOGE to cut underperforming employees, close unneeded regional offices, eliminate redundant management layers, reduce “non-critical” jobs, automate simple tasks, and limit outside consultants.

The hourlong meeting covered various topics, with Trump answering reporters’ questions on Ukraine, Russia, Taiwan, the House Republicans’ budget plan, and more.

Bezos Overhauls Washington Post Op-Ed Section.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, owner of the liberal Washington Post newspaper, announced a major overhaul of The Post’s opinion section Wednesday, stating it will now focus only on personal liberty and the free market.

Post Opinion Editor David Shipley chose to resign after the announcement rather than continue under the new directive.

Bezos argued that the internet already provides a platform for diverse viewpoints on general political issues and that The Post should focus only on the “defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.” Here’s his post on X.

The move drew praise from Elon Musk but also criticism from some Post journalists and others who expressed concerns about editorial independence.

Planetary Parade Lines Up in Night Sky.

A rare celestial event will take place tonight and Friday as seven planets—Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars—become visible in the night sky, creating a striking display of planetary alignment.

The event, known as a “planetary parade,” can be best seen just after sunset today and Friday. This will be the last opportunity to view all seven planets together until 2040.

To see the planetary lineup, start with Venus, Jupiter, and Mars (see photo), the brightest planets visible to the naked eye. Mercury and Saturn need a clear horizon. Uranus may be spotted with binoculars under dark skies, and Neptune requires a telescope.

POLITICS.

The Trump administration is set to announce a 25% tariff on European Union imports, including cars, to counter the EU’s 10% tariff on American cars and 17.5% value-added tax on U.S. goods.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a former Democratic vice-presidential candidate, said he won’t run for the state’s open Senate seat as he’s considering running for another term as governor.

Israel and Hamas agreed to exchange the bodies of four dead Israeli hostages for 600 Palestinian prisoners Wednesday night, maintaining their fragile ceasefire despite mutual accusations of transgressions.
