Of the five people pulled from the 38-degree waters, four were unconscious when rescued, with one now in critical condition and another listed as stable.

American Pets: Dogs vs. Cats.

Almost 114 million Americans own at least one pet, with dogs being the most popular choice at 59.8 million, followed by cat ownership at 42.2 million, according to a U.S. pet ownership analysis.

The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that 45.5% of U.S. households own dogs, and 32.1% have cats. Other pets include fish (2.9%), reptiles (1.8%), and birds (1.6%).

In 2023, pet spending in America reached $186 billion, and it’s projected to hit $260 billion by 2030.

Cats are the least expensive pets, averaging $1,311 a year, due to their low-maintenance and independent nature, compared to $1,516 for other animals.
