And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 KJV.
Devotion
I accepted Christ as my Savior at 27 years old. For years before that, I found my joy in late nights and alcohol. I share parts of that life openly, telling others how Christ pursued me when I was running full speed away from Him.
But there are many details I keep to myself, things that only my closest loved ones know. Things that still bring me shame. Things that I would rather forget.
A few years ago, a very close friend of mine was going through an incredibly hard time. Her mother was dying, and she had no idea how to handle it. One day, she confided in me that she was having suicidal thoughts. She asked me how I could be so sure that God was even real.
The details of my life before Christ began pouring out of me. There was no shame, there was no embarrassment. I felt humbled to show my hurting friend that in the depths of darkness, God was there with me. That He pulled me from a life of sin, a life that was my choice, and that He would pull her from this darkness, too. I told her that God fills every longing, every broken part, every hurt we have, and He is the only thing that will truly give us peace.
Months later, she told me that conversation saved her life. She said it was the push she needed to get into therapy with a Christian counselor and get help. Otherwise, she would have made a terrible choice.
God used my salvation, the story of His redemption in me, to point back to Himself, and to keep my friend on this earth. It amazes me to think that in the midst of my rebellion, when I was focused on everything but God, He knew how He would use this story for good. I know that conversation was completely led by the Lord. That was His agenda that day, not mine. I never planned to share those details with my friend. But I’m honored that God would take my story and use it for good.
As our verse of the day says, God will use everything in your story for good, too. I urge you to share your story with others. Share your hurts, your heartaches, your joy with those around you so they can see God working in you. God will use the milestones in your life, both good and bad, to point people to Him.
