Scripture
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Matthew 5:13 KJV
Devotion
The two metaphors of salt and light in Matthew 5:13-16 indicate the influence Christians exert in the community if, and only if, they maintain their distinctive character as portrayed in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10). Asking for the salt is part of the conversation around the meal table. There are various uses of salt:
First, salt makes food palatable. Even in Old Testament, salt was used in sacrifices to make the sacrificial food palatable (Leviticus 2:13). Without an appetite, there will be no eating, and without eating there will be no sustaining. Remove the appetite, death results.
Secondly, salt is used to preserve food. Christians are preservatives. We bring hope where there is corruption. Our task is to preserve the corrupt world from a fierce judgement of God.
Thirdly, salt creates thirst. Without salt in food, there would be an improper intake of liquid. This leads to dehydration leading to sickness or death. Christians are in this world to create a thirst for Christ so that unbelievers may know the fountain of the living water. No thirst, no drinking; and no drinking, no life.
Fourthly, light expels darkness. To be the light means being more than useful, but also being more glorious. We are called to influence the world. The world sat in darkness, Christ raised up His disciples to shine in it; and, that they may do so, from Him they borrow and derive their light.
Fifthly, the light exposes the hidden dirt. Life is full of hidden issues that we may not be aware of, or we may be deliberately denying them. It is only after the light of Christ has shone in our lives do we realize how we were surrounded by these things. Christians expose the sinfulness of this world by declaring the Word of God and bringing Christ into people’s lives. When the Word of God is proclaimed, our hidden sins are exposed.
Finally, light attracts life. Where there is light, there is an attraction of all sorts of insects. Though the light expels darkness, the very light attracts some flying insects. A life of light is always disturbed by the challenges of small issues. These issues are most of the time magnified to look big, while in fact they are small.
