Devotion
You know, when we read the story about David and Goliath, we tend to see ourselves as David. I want to give us permission to see this story from a new perspective. We love the story of David because we want to be like him—the man takes the weight of a nation upon himself, faces insurmountable odds and defeats the giant enemy. He’s a hero! However, I wonder if we should give ourselves permission to be more like David’s brothers.
David first entered the battle not to fight, but to bring food to his brothers at his father’s command. The father knew the brothers could use some food and encouragement. He also knew the brothers, and the rest of the people, were afraid and full of anxiety. The opposition in front of them was bigger than their belief.
God knows when we need some encouragement. He knows we see our problems looming over us like a giant. God sees this. And He’s bigger and stronger than even our greatest of struggles. Jesus came to deliver us from our enemies. He ultimately stood up to sin and death and also consistently faces our other battles with us.
Today, would you be willing to take the weight off your shoulders and not be the David of the story? What would it look like if you let Jesus be David and you be David’s brothers? Maybe it isn’t up to you to be the lone ranger and hero of the story.
Maybe the Lord wants to fight your battles. Are you willing to let Him get involved? Pray for God’s wisdom and discernment of how to let Him be involved in your situation. Ask for forgiveness for times when your selfish pride leads you to the desire to be a hero instead of being a spectator of God’s power. Then pray about how God will have you reengage with the right perspective.
